Went to start the Mav to go to work,
Battery flat:doh
I get AA with Lloyds bank so he came and started the engine.:clap
Cloud of smoke from under the turbo as it started.:eek:
Could this be the source of my oil leak?:bow
Off the my local Battery shop, Anglia battery
£85 ish later off to work.
Finished work, rear drivers side tyre somewhat 'D' shaped:eek:
I have had better day but all in all the Mav has done well,
To date, I have had it 5 years today
two tyres, 1 battery, 1/2 an exhaust system and a set of disk pads, pretty cheap motoring
Question to those who know this stuff, is there anywhere in the region of the Turbo to start looking for the oil leak?
If it had not been for the breakdown and the bonnet up when the AA man started it I would not have seen blue smoke, which cleared up straight away, suggesting it had pooled/collected since I last ran the engine and was not a big enough leak to smoke all the time.
My oil usage is minimal, just enough to ruin my block paving.
 
If you need another turbo ( worse case scenario) let me know, I'm sure I have a 2.7 one in the shed

Rocker Gasket

Have you checked the rocker gasket cover could it be a small leak dribbling downhill ?
 
If the smoke was just as you started it, there would not have been anything hot enough around the engine to cause leaking oil to smoke... It takes a little time for even the exhaust to get hot enough to smoke when oil is on it.

So if it was just as you started it, I would be going for an exhaust gas leak by the turbo, and the oil was burnt by the engine and blown out of there.

If it was a short while after it started, then there are a couple of places over there, where engine oil likes to leak from.

The oil pipes to and from the turbo are possible, and pigs to get to, to check.

On mine, it was the large rubber pipe that connects to the turbo, take it off and see if there is a pool of oil sitting down there... When I had issues with the oil control valve, mine would drain back from the intercooler, and the top pipes, and settle there, eventually leaking out and dripping down.
 
If you think about the location of the turbo to the exhaust front downpipe flange it stands a chance that what you've got here mate is a leaking exhaust :thumb2
 
Hi all, thanks for the replies, the smoke [blue] was the moments the engine started. I watched when he started it again for a better look, no blue smoke but a puff of black.
Could the cloud of blue smoke be oil leaking into the turbo, exhaust gas should be hot enough to burn it.
I will get a mate to start if from cold while I am videoing the area, see if I can locate the exact place.
Mine is a TD no intercooler
The AA bloke said it would be easy to fit an inter cooler and make the Mav run better, any thoughts on that, after the oil problem is solved of course
I have a new rocker gasket on order
 
Sounds more likely oil sitting down in the turbo, like you say.

Leave the car for a couple of hours, then pop the large rubber pipe that runs between the turbo and air filter, off at the turbo end. You might want to put a rag under it to catch any oil that runs out.

Oil in there was the bane of my life when I got my T2, and to make things worse, I had several issues, so as I fixed one, the problem seemed to still be there.
Long story short,
High pressure in the crank, caused by scored piston bores.
Hardened valve seals
faulty crank case pressure release valve
worn turbo.

The problem is, the inside of the flexible rubber pipe has recesses on the inside where the oil gets trapped, then trickles down once the car is stopped. It then pools at the mouth of the turbo, and is drawn in as soon as you start the car.

When you take the pipe off, try and do it without tipping it too much, and if there is not too much oil, you can see which side of the lip it is sitting... all on the pipe side, then the oil is arriving from the engine side, if it is all inside the turbo and the pipe is clean, then it is most likely the turbo at fault.

This is not 100% though, as the oil will run back from the pipe over the engine (IC on those with them), so make it look like the turbo, but then you will normally find oil in the rubber pipe as well.

Blue smoke on start up

Sounds a bit like valve guide seals if they have them. My old 300 TE 4 matic did that but it was never an issue for MoT emissions and did not use any measurable oil. I guess it was the oil getting past the guides as it stood overnight.

Would someties give a spot of blue if you had a long downhill descent on over run then small puff as the throttle came back on.
 
No blue smoke from tail pipe, not much oil used, enough to ruin my block paving though, thanks for comment
