Hello folks.

I have a 1999 2.7TDi Terrano.

The starter was changed just before winter got cold, and have noticed since then, my fuel does not last very long anymore. Its come to my attention though that there is a stem at the back of the fuel pump, that feels like it points direct in the way of the starter, feels like a banjo type of bolt with a washer and a pipe/tube connected to it.

Could this be tampered with in anyway to change the fuel mix/MPG?

At first I though it may have been the injectors so I did get new tips and rebuilt them.. problem I didn't take note of the shims&springs when I took them all part, so not sure if it matters as much as it does if it were shims for a piston.

if you are saying that you fitted new elements to your injectors then you have to set them up on a calibration machine, it is not simply a case of fitting the same shims as before, as each element will have machining differences you will need to go to a firm that has a calibration machine, Rick

is that the pump that needs calibration then do you mean? or the injectors needing removed to each be calibrated by a firm?

i think the banjo your describing is the return leak off pipe from the injectors

I think he does yes, normally you would send your injectors off for refurb, where they use specialist machinery to refurb them, plus specialised cleaning.

this might explain your increased fuel consumption. I don't think it will be the starter itself...
 
thank you all for your help. will find a place that can calibrate the injectors for me, and take them off to send them out if the company isnt local.

next think i will do is take the tank off for a look over, fuel warning light is dicky, randomly come on or not come on at all, so may aswell give the tank a good clean inside while im having a look anyway. might find a corroded sender or feeder pipe while im at it :)

You can get to the sender and fuel lines that connect to the fuel tank, through a metal inspection cover in the boot area, under the carpet.
Remove the plastic trim across the rear door that holds the carpet down, and look under to the right, (offside) and you will see a plate held down with 4 m6 hexagon bolts.:thumb2

yes injectors need setting up on a specialist machine, no easy way out, Rick

have arranged a firm to sort my injectors. will do a few other jobs on the truck while shes off the road for a few days. new radiator, check rest of fuel system. and a few other things.
