Some have a handle and lock button on the inside of the door, can you reach that, or does yours not have that?

To be honest, the most likely thing will be to see if you can remove the rear door trim panel to get to the lock...

But first, have you tried unlocking it with the key and the remote, trying the rear door each time? My Wife's car only unlocks the boot on the second press of the remote, but never from the key.

Failing that, it may be the unlock solenoid not working, but that could be anything from faulty/broken wiring in the door hinge area, the solenoid it's self, through to the locking linkage coming adrift.

I would stand at the back door, and see if you can hear the solenoid working when you zap the car with the remote, at least that would give you a small clue if the door is at least trying to unlock there.

If the Solenoid is doing something, it would be worth trying the trick that often works on the rear side doors.... try pushing the door hard closed with one hand before lifting the handle with the other, so you take the load off of the latch, then keeping the handle lifted, open the door.

Good luck

Yep, removed the rear door trim and opened the locking mechanism manually. Seems to have done the trick, must have been jammed..

At times I have experienced the similar issues, noticing that if the rear door outside lever/trigger is stuck in "depressed mode", the peg on the inside of the door won't jump up and down when locking/unlocking. Some 5-56, WD-40 or some other lubricating spray and a small screwdriver to persuade the lever/trigger back into normal position might be a cure.
Has worked on my Terrano 98 for 370000 km in salty Swedish conditions.
