The Patrol has two short rubber pipes in the metal lines from the Auto gearbox to the cooler to allow you to take the body off the chassis, these are located behind the nearside headlight, one of mine has started leaking, I am waiting for new pipe to fix it.
My question is what oil do I put in the gearbox, the manual shows J matic but this seems unavailable, the local Nissan dealer has given me n series including cvt as that is the only one he has, I have however been told that J and cvt do not mix happy, I am reading that s matic can be mixed with J matic but to be honest am totally confused.
I have ordered a bottle of j matic off ebay and just pray it is genuine but who knew topping up a gearbox could be this difficult.
Has anybody else come across this and what resolution did they find.

Kind regards

Russell.

You should be fine with any Dextron 3 ATF in the RE4RO3A auto mate.

Comma do AQ3 which is a standard D3 ATF or also MVATF PLUS which is an all singing all dancing ATF that covers D3 and the Nissan matics (including J).

Hi Russ
I've got 10 litres of Millermatic Gold SP111-WS unused here.
Top of the tree Premium ATF
Check the specs

Please take them off my hands, I don't own an auto anymore.

It cost me £70 and I sold my last auto before I could use it.

All yours for £40 + postage.

I have posted replies several times about ATF fluids used in Nissan Automatics. Most manufacturers specify that you can only use their own specific brand of ATF that tends to be overpriced. They seem to go out of their way to use designations such as type J or D to make it difficult to buy other than genuine branded manufacturers oils.

From a warranty perspective this is essentially true but the reality is that you can put identical alternative branded fluids or better specification oils in virtually all autoboxes without fear of them failing.

As gearbox technology & design has improved over the years so has the quality of ATF's.
Over the next few days I will start a new thread on this subject rather than reply to individual members when the question has arisen.

Unlike the argument over Mineral V Synthetics in older engines as Dexron Grade Specification has evolvedover the last 50 or so years from Dexron 1,2,3,4 & the Semi or fully Synthetic you can use the later fluids without fear in older gearboxes.

Essentially they are backwards convertable, you can put Dexron 4 in a gearbox that was designed when the best oil was Dexon 2. You can't safely use Dexron 2 in a later vehicle that was built specifying Dexron 4 Some changes in ATF specifications have included the use of additives that help extend the life of the later PTFE type seals moving away from the earlier seal compositions that were almost rubber!.

As vehicles have become more powerful the ATF's have had to cope with huge increases in power

Funny, that's exactly where mine was leaking from I've just removed the old clip and put a couple of jubilee clips to stop the leak and I'll repair it when I get home.

Quick update the hose had failed, the pipes have a sharp barb to keep the pipe on, this had cut into the inside rubber hose and caused it to leak along the cotton between the two rubber sections. Replaced pipes no problem, however as my power steering needed bleeding afterwards, I assume this is not the gearbox oil cooler.

Kind regards

Russell.
