OK to throw a spanner in the works yes they can have clutch slip/band brake slip it is how an auto works, in this case I suspect the lock up clutch in the fluid flyeheel , it gets its oil feed through the main shaft and it is a known point of wear such that when very hot the oil leaks at a greater rate than can be supplied, so under high load your lock up clutch is slipping dropping back to 60 lessens the load so for now it can cope, the next stage as wear progresses is loss of reverse gear , sorry but think your box is on the way out, could be wrong of course, hope I am but I have stripped one of these boxes and seen it first hand, Rick

and I have the photos

As a suggestion, try connecting a lamp/led to the torque convertor lock solenoid. Then drive the vehicle and try and ascertain if the increase in engine rpm is consistent with a change in the solenoid operation.
This will help identify wether the problem is of an electrical/control nature or mechanical/hydraulic.

Thank you for that. If it was wear and tear would I not smell the clutch burn. And the colour being brown or black. Which it isnt

No as the clutch is in the fluid flywheel immersed in oil you will not smell it, and if it is in the early stages of failure the fluid will not have overheated yet, but give Ray's solenoid test a go, it has to be worth it, Rick

Hi thanks. Where is the solonoids. And I cant find the a/t section
AT section, page 71 ~ 74.

You should connect the test lamp between ground and the grey wire with red tracer.

At 90K i'd be very shocked if the clutches were going so soon at a 190K maybe:augie

But do we know the history? like has it been used for heavy towing, as the Auto can't tow as much as the manual box.
So... is there a tow bar, or evidence that one has been fitted?

Do I take the whole of the valve body out. Iknow there is 2 sections??

hi

if the box is not staying in torque lock or the symptoms are no overdrive the problem could be the ecu

if all is well you should be doing about 2.5k revs and 70 mph.

the ecu could be in 2 places - under the centre of the dashboard behind the stereo or in the rear drivers side quarter behind the trim

good luck

Thats why I am suggesting a test lamp connected to the TC solenoid should help deciding wether its being "told" to disengage or simply failing.
There are a number of possibilities that may cause the TCM to disengage the TC lock, so it has to be easier to diagnose if we know this is what is actually happening.

I'm just wondering here. When I come to think about it. A while back I noticed the red light on the power/Eco switch, blinking when I stuck my key in the ignition. Now I'm sure that is diagnostic read out on the older terranos. hopefully I will get a test lamp today. As I'm going to be undersealing today.

if the red light is lit permanently on the power / eco switch it indictates you are in power mode .....not sure if overdrive is disabled in power mode , but possibly ..... if however the red light is flashing , then this is diagnostic mode ....... you need to count the long and short flashes to give the code .

in normal operation i find it best to put the power / eco switch in the middle position

There you go Pete, you have more knowledge than I have, well done and have a happy Easter, Rick

Yes it was blinking. Is there a way to activate the diagnostic read out again,,,,,,. I had a look at the wires. They are all covered in grime. Could not deter the wire suggested. And that was after a clean with a dry cloth. I did want to use a solvent in case it got into the wiring.
