now I have rotated the shaft anti clock and you can see it will pass over the unlocked slot before locking again, but that dog clutch will take a lot of stick, I dont know what part fails as I have not seen one that has failed yet but I am sure makeitfit or mudlifecrises will enlighten me in due course, there are 4 snap rings in total, two I cannot see causing any problems the other two, one holds the shaft in the hub and the other holds the inner splined part in this pic, you can just see the grove to the right of the splines before the cone clutch with the horizontal lines on it.

So can someone who's managed to bust their snap rings tell Rick which ones it is, as it would be good to finally understand this thing.

Not that I care, having been fixed hubs the last three years, but I hate unanswered questions LOL

RICK when you hear which rings have snapped typically (and I suspect its the flimsy ones) it would be good to know exactly WHEN you believe they are under any pressure/stress, so that people can take care at that point.

As I said above, I can't believe that the skinny rings are in the drive train during gearbox rocking for example, or they'd be gone in a flash.........

its the 2 ring effort on the right of ricks pics that either wear out and dont grab one another anymore or they break into tiny bits usually from mechanic re assembly error more than use .

had many a row with terranosoreass about the workings of these things ... he was right in many circumstances if i remember correct .

the best and my preferred method was to engage 4wd and take the bloody rings out leaving wheels locked to the drive shafts permanent which would give you the same set up as the later t2's with fixed hubs

no crunching or reversing shite

So what do the brake rings do, the two thin washer type with castlations, these are on the drive side of the hub. :doh

they fit into the auto hub shell which in turn fixes to the wheel with the 6 hex bolts . as seen in pic 4 of rics pics

So it is the cam rings that go, I can see that, as if given abuse the dog clutch will ratchet and the spring is quite strong, so the cam bits will take a hammering, and break, yes that make sense, and yes they can be assembled incorrectly, I might have the names of the parts wrong so must look at the manual and identify the parts as per say, Rick
