hi guys more trouble with these poxy auto hubs been out today and went for a drive and home a round trip of about 35 miles and upon touching them straight away they were hot not to the point where i couldnt touch them but hot enough to raise my eye brows.

my question is should they be if not why would they be hot and what can be checked ?

paul

i'd strip them asap and have a look. I've never touched mine but I don't think they should be that hot.

.

when you say wheel bearings when i had them out they looked ok ?
should i put more grease in would that work ?

these poxy hubs a driving me mad

why would they be getting hot ?

Did you you rebuild the bearings to the right torque etc and grease them properly on reassembly? They get hot because there's not enough grease and or they're done up too tight etc.
Take a chill pill and RTFM and they're piss easy, honest :thumbs

.

thanks makeitfit i think i'll take it all off again and pack it out with grease and loosen the lock ring a little.

the nasty circlips may need replacing as one looks a little mishaped, are they easy to get hold of ?

Circlips should be easily available from your local nuts n bolts outlet or scrappy if not

.

if the circlip is in the groove will it still be ok ? and will it also be ok if it moes around in that groove ?

It will revolve in it's slot but should be safely in there :thumb2

I have know the auto hubs to run hot, there is a download for stripping and cleaning them. A good quick fix i made up is to take them off put a dollop of engine oil in them and slap them back on again - this also frees up all the old grease for a proper strip and re lube later.

If you look at my pics of the hub internals, there is a bit that can break off and this will allow the break ring to engage all the time but only gently, and will build up heat, cant remember the exact thread but it ended in deaux (ok spelt it wrong but 2 in French) Rick

yes Rick i have had that happen too, it's very hard to photograph but a small 'corner' snaps of the big cast lump in the middle of the hub - good point :thumb2

Ah so I was'nt dreaming, how are you mate, Rick

Just reckoned as he'd taken the hub apart the bearing may have been over cranked
Nik do do much off road?

fine thanks Rick, hope things are going well for you :thumb2

nothing to complain about other than too much work, just does not seem to stop, I know I should not complain, but I am supposed to be retired (well semi) but I have so much to do at home and no time to do it, OK I know I dont get out of bed till 9 or 10 and only work till 3 or 4 but it is still hard, Rick

hi guys i do abit of off roading in the truck makeitfit why do you ask ? i think i'll take it all of again and re grease and perhaps ive tightened the lock ring too tight

also when e doing the circlips does it matter if they turn around in the groove ?

I do as much off roading as poss and as hard as I can get away with:sly
Auto hubs have been brilliant but I have had hot hubs from not taking the trouble to do the bearings properly :augie You'd also spot a duff auto hub off road PDQ

when you take the auto hub off look at the spring pushed brake ring on the part you have removed it should be captive by the center hub, if it is not then it will be rubbing with its mating cone on the vehicle hub, this is only supposed to happen when the half shaft is turning which is how the self locking hubs engage, Rick
