Hi,

Would really appreciate any help/advice on this.

I was driving approx 50mph, suddenly there's a loud whooshing/whirring noise. I stopped immediately and called out a local garage. Driving the car very slowly produced a clackety clack sound. Side of road diagnosis was collapsed o/s free wheel hub. Car was then driven 4 miles to garage.
I now have the car back with the hub internals in a box. The hubs appear to be in different positions (will try to get photos on here). The brake ring on the n/s looks damaged.

Garage suggests 2 new hubs but they don't know how this happened.
Is it possible this has been caused while driving in 2wd?
One of the brake rings was replaced many years ago as it was in 2 pieces, only discovered when trying to select 4wd and we didn't have any!:D

Common problem with them, I've had exactly the same happen to me in the past with the Maverick I had before the Terrano

I have a spare set of Auto Hubs that I don't need any more due to having fixed hubs on the new one

£20 + postage for the set if you want them?

Normally the actual hubs are fine its the brake rings that stick and cause the problem. I changed mine to manual lockers for this reason but the price of manuals have gone up now too so not as practical. I'd be a bit worried that the garage has done some damage or lost something when theyve striped all yours out. Banshees offer is a good one especially if it includes a good set of brake rings. There is thread after thread regarding them on here. Just this week a member swapped his fixed hubs for autos so bits seem interchangeable too.

Thanks for the replies.
The garage said the drive shaft may have caused damage to the diff because the hub had jammed, is this likely?
Banshee- would like to take you up on that offer.
This is the damaged brake ring

Yep that right hand lug is buggered. Doubt there will be any further damage to be honest. The rest of your hubs would of been fine, just that one ring that caused your problem.

I wouldn't have thought so as you stopped as soon as you could:thumb2 I had auto hubs lock on my old T2 a few times & the diff was always fine. I'd replace the auto hubs & see how it is before letting the garage start stripping things down as that will cost you for something that isn't needed:doh

This is probably a stupid question but why would this break when 4 wheel drive is not engaged?

Because they can lol.

Lack of use
Incorrect use
Not reversing after use to unlock them
They needed a good service

Sounds like your garage don't know anything about these or they are trying to get more money from you.

If the hub jammed on it would just turn the driveshaft and diff, not break anything.

I stopped as soon as I could, but the mechanic siad he probably wouldn't do any more damage driving it back to the garage. Then when I collected it he said about the diff:eek:

Fez is right, if you were not in 4wd the two axles would not of been linked so could not get transmission wind up. All it would of done is the equivelent of having one fixed hub so at the worst it simply turned the front diff and propshaft.

It isn't incorrect use but you have hit the nail with the service comment:doh
The truck is so damn good that I expect it to look after itself!

The hubs are the last thing that anyone carrying out a service would look at. There is a workshop download on this subject in the quick links section. Auto lockers are brilliant when theyre working but a real pain when they play up. Some people stick a drop of gear oil in them, a bit messy to reassemble but sounds like itll do the job.

Don't do it banshee. Get them on your motor and get rid of the fixed hubs. Takes less than an hour to do and mpg will go up a lot. Trust me.

nothing wrong with that brake ring, if the hub goes dry then it starts turning the shaft, which then actuates the brake rings and causes the noises you experienced, I have had this once on the road, simply removed the hub drove home sussed the problem and stuck some oil in it, job done, and no cannot damage the diff, Rick
