As title I’ve searched this forum for a how to for a oil change on the auto box fitted to my 2.7 tdi terrano its a year 2000.

Also would you be changing the auto box filter too or just the oil and any info on procedures etc would be great it’s only done 56k miles so not many but it’s 20 years old.

I reckon Elty or Solarman will be along with info

As far as I know you can only drain about a third of the oil at a time so requires several empty and refills. Think you fill it via the dipstick tube.

ATF change etc

As has been said you can't change all the oil in one go as the torque convertor does not drain when you drop the drain plug in the auto box - so you only drain about half the actual capacity.

If your fluid is nice and pink I would not worry about the screen filter change. Just change the ATF by draining into a pan. Measure the amount of oil that has been drained and replace with new ATF. Then to fine tune the fluid change check the fluid level when the engine is at its normal running temperature with the transmission in Park & with the engine running.

If you overfill the transmission even by a relatively small amount it will cause "flared" gear changes, as long as the level is between the min & max on the dipstick you will be okay. I find it much easier to measure the drained fluid so you put back in what you have lost.

If the fluid is brown & smells burnt on the dipstick or even worse if its turned a milky grey colour (caused by water contamination) then I would definitely change the pan /screen filter and do a second or even third fluid change every week or so.. This multiple oil change effectively does the best to do a complete change. If the drained fluid is say half the capacity then the change of fluid is 50% on first change, a second change improves this to 75%, a third is around 87-90%.

I have always used the best ATF I could afford. The link gives you an insight into fluid types and retrospective upgrading. I found the Nissan oil was stupidly expensive with a specification stuck in the past (Nissan Matic D) so I upgraded to synthetic - Fuchs Titan 4400.

Out of interest on a 3 series BMW the ATF is for life as are some other makes including the new Mini.

The only way to

Thank you very much for the help so it’s just a case of draining and replacing what’s been took out then start it up and take it for a drive to mix it all through?

Yes provided your existing fluid is a reasonable colour with no burnt smell.

I changed the ATF on my old Carlton CDi every 12k miles - I bought it with about 65k miles on the clock, sold it to my brother at around 140k miles he parted with it at around 190k mile - never had any issues, never changed the screen filter!

Ok I will have a look next week when I get some time and see what condition the oil is in on my auto dipstick then change it.

Thanks again for the time and advice, greatly appreciated.

Excellent description that:thumb2
And you're right Jim, refill through the dipstick hole.
