hi i have seen a terrano with auto box just seeing if anyone has had bad experiences with one etc the vehicle i am pondering over is a 54 plate 125000 on the clock only had a mistral auto before but cant seem to remember what is was like old age setting in :nenau

Iv'e got an 18 year old 2.7 tdi auto with 128K on it.
Never had any issues with it.
Regular ATF changes and don't over do the weights if towing:thumb2:thumb2

thats good to hear only tow a 8x4 trailer for holiday use max weight is 750kg thanks for your help any one fitted a double din radio in the later ones with the hazzard switch in the radio switch not a problem just thinking of space for it in dash :thumb2

Blocky has a 3.0 auto, tows a massive caravan and off roads with it. Says he has no probs, I'm impressed with how it copes tbh

all good news by the sound of things :thumb2 i have arranged a viewing sat morning will keep you all posted

I have. 99 t reg and to be honest
I’d rather drive that than the 3 litre. Only thing I can say is it needs working and s switch to make it go but I’m happy to just drive and be relaxed. MPG isn’t as good as a manual but not that bad really. I only tow a small trailer but it’s quite heavy and it made it up Holmemoss with no effort at all. In case you haven’t heard of that it’s a big hill that was used for tour de france and tour de yorkshire.

thanks jim the one i am looking at is a 2004 3 litre auto i have only had 2.7td before i do like the 2.7td but finding them now with out rust issues is hard should have kept the ones i had before :doh

I've had no auto box problems and it tows my 'van at 1900kg fully laden ok. It gets mighty warm though and you've got that cooling pipes into the rad business. :doh

ah yes i remember my mistral had them bumped up the costs of the replacement radiator i had to buy from nissan buy a lot but that was an oldish truck so had done well :lol

had my 3l a year now and tows van well and temp stays the same even up hill.

Well, I've just towed a full twin axle trailer (750kgs)and full car for 580 kms, with no problems......60/70mph no struggle on hills......

But I will, pete never towed to my knowledge, he bought a Mistral on which the box died within a very short period, he had a local repair shop fit a second hand box but cos they did it wrong effd the drive plate, which when it was returned to them said his ends had gone, I collected it and fitted another drive plate, all was well for a while till he lost reverse when warm if I remember correctly, so obtained another box and all was well till he got rear ended and the motor died, but in the mean time I had stripped the old box and was not impressed, enough said, Rick

I thought the early TD had a different auto box to the post 96 TDI.
I suppose it all depends on how well its been looked after prior to you getting it.

Terrano auto box is the RE4R01A which is just a lighter duty version of the RE4R03A in the Trols - both with a good rep for being straightforward reliable boxes particularly when looked after :nenau

You can fit a Transgo Shift Kit which improves them and makes them even more reliable (I did on my Trol).

Having towed 1.6T+ caravan for past 6 years (total about 11K miles) I have yet to be disappointed by the performance of my 3L auto.

Points to note though;
1, Water temp. gauge is of the 'operator pacifying' type', ie. it does not move much over quite a large range but then shoots up if a certain high temp. is reached. Therefore it bears watching up hills. I have an electric rad. fan & tend to switch this on manually before any steep hills (if conditions justify it). Perhaps the standard mechanical fan is ok? I've removed the air con rad from mine (it's never worked, so no loss!) & this has improved the natural flow noticeably.
2, regarding the above, the transmission cooler needs forced air to keep the trans. fluid cool, so keep man eye out for the 'over temp.' light. (Never seen it on mine during driving).
3, change the trans. fluid at least every 30K, more often if doing a lot of towing. Only about 3.5L (1/2 total) will drain from the box so some fresh fluid will only improve things. Take pain to get the level correct as it can have an adverse effect on gear changes.
4, de-select over drive if frequent changes are occurring (undulating terrain) so as to extend gearbox life.

Don't read too much into the above points, they’re intended to be more of a 'stitch-in-time' than a religion LOL .

oh, have you got a link to it for nosey purposes lol

heres the link to the one i looked at today total rubbish was told in great condition first of all seat covers are hiding one wrong coloured seat drivers has a lot of damage to foam and leather front wings rusty by mouldings started to break away when pushed both sides were the same then i looked at the sill pushed on bubbly rust near side and it fell right in other side looked as crusty the chassis was undersealed only on three sides not on the top and they were rusty and underseal looked freshly done the seller said he would get sills repaired so i took it for a test drive to keep him hoping it was slow to start lot of winding over and gearbox was clunky and brakes were scary when i got back i asked was the mot expiry correct he said yes it had a 12 month mot april 2019 and was done by the garage next door so i told him i would not be buying due to dangerous brakes and the sills being rotton bearing in mind this was a retail car sales place and suggested he gets it re moted
