Over the last six months or so my "52" plate Terrano II 3.0 LWB has started to show the red ATP light on the dashboard.

This happens while it's stationery and while driving.

Other than this light going on and off at seemingly random intervals, I have not noticed anything strange.

The manual says that it's something to do with the Park position of the Automatic transmission.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Roger.

Thanks zippy, I downloaded the manuals when I first joined the group so I've already had a go at that.

I've tried searching the manual for it but the only reference I can find is in the Electrical section where it shows the lamp itself and the wiring schematic on Pages 70/71.

I can't see any reference to it anywhere else other than in the owners manual where it says:

"This light indicates that the parking mechanism does not engae. If the transfer control is not secured in any drive position while the automatic transmission selector lever is in the P (Park) position, the transmission will disengage and the wheel will not lock."

"Shift the transfer control lever into 2H or 4L position when th ewarning light comes on"

I understand what it's trying to say but I've checked and re-checked the transfer lever and moving it only has the effect of changing the Hi/Lo 2wd/4wd as it should.

I've checked numerous times and theer no way that the transfer lever isn't locked in.

What's worrying is that it comes at while I'm actually driving i.e. on the move !!

Roger, I don't know much about the automatic transmission models but are you sure your transmission oil levels are ok.

The full circuit of the ATP warning light & switch is shown on page EL-82.
Looks as though its designed to indicate when the transfer box is in neutral, rendering the park position on the man g/box useless.
Good to know if your in the habit of not using the handbrake!

I've not noticed any other symptoms that would be related to this light so I'm not to concerned. I just wondered if it was common.

From what I can understand of the description, in combination with the circuit, the light should come on when the main gear selector is in Park and the transfer lever is not engaged, otherwise it should be off.
Mine goes on and off as I'm driving along, maybe it's just a loose wire that I'm not going to spend time looking for!

Oohh forgot to say, Transmission oil was changed by my trusty mechanic about 9,000 miles ago, just after I'd changed the front and rear diff' oil.
which reminds me, I must put a note in my diary to check the A/T oil level.
