In my day a service did not just mean oil, filters and greasing, it also required checking the whole motor over for anything that was showing signs of wear etc, a customed eye would pick up points that would be reported to the owner, seems that has all gone out the window cos if the computer says no problem then that is what is assumed, Rick

Not sure it is the modern car so much as the modern drivers....

I am surprised at how many people do not know the first thing about cars, and won't even change a tyre if they have a puncture.

I know people who have had a car go into limp mode, pull over, and then just wait for the breakdown service, with out even trying to start the car again.

in the old days, if the exhaust fell off, you got out, tied it up with something, or just pulled it off, and carried on your way, I am amazed at how many cars I have seen with the exhaust laying on the ground, and they are just sitting in the car with the hazards going.

Most modern cars don't even have a spare wheel, you get a bottle of goo instead, just what the goo is supposed to do with a tyre that has ran over a broken bottle, must never occurred to the penny pinchers in the accounts dept.

People don't usually need to be able to try and start the car or try to tie an exhaust up, they have breakdown cover and a warranty, they wouldn't try to fix their TV or Microwave, why would they try to fix the transport appliance?

One of my mates is a good spannerman, great with tractors, bikes, old shoguns etc, he drives a 10yo Audi, thing just quit on him, He didn't even try to sort it at the roadside, we towed it to a bloke with the diagnostic gear, he plugged it in, sucked his teeth, reset something and voila, one running A4.

It's getting to the stage where mechanical knowledge is obsolete, I'm waiting for cars to carry a "no user serviceable parts" sticker like a telly.

Thats what i ment by servicing :thumb2
People these days dont have to fix things they just go buy a new one or ring the garage up and get someone else to sort it!!
If your in a position to buy new the chances are you can buy another new one 3 years later when the warranty has run out!! or buy into the extended warranty schemes they run.

Even manufactures extended warranty has its limits, the Jaguar one being pretty good, they still only replace certain things based on discresion, eg lower arm bushes and the likes can be covered if the mileage is deemed "acceptable"

Failed components is an absolute yes, wiring, corrosion and the likes is a big no!

Manufactures main 2/3 year warranty is the daddy! People are cottoning on to this and claiming for all they can get their hands on, and I guess, rightfully so..
