Any ideas on this?

I have a rattle behind the dash on my 98 r20 TDi and in pursuit of this rattle I took the cowl and instrument cluster off.
No sign of the rattle but I found an led, in a proper holder with about 6" of wire connected into the pcb that backs up the instruments. It was just hanging loose. (not the cause of the rattle )
It looks like an original fitting not an add on. The led is one of the large 5mm types and the holder looks like it should fit into a socket. There are no unfilled sockets on the back of the cluster and all the normal warning/indicator lights work as they should
With ignition on the light glows steady, with engine running it flashes about twice a second.
What and why is it - anybody?

what colour is the led

only thing I can think of is the red light to indicate immobiliser, but that wouldnt flash if the engine was running, sorry, i am lost, cant think of any original fitting led on these motors.

sounds like airbag warning light to me, check that the position lights up when the ignition is initially turned on, if not there`s your lamp

airbag light, when you first turn on it stays lit, then starts to flash.

Looks like the air bag light, no light on the dash at ignition on, although I still cant see where it should fit.
Somebody has had a problem and solved it the easy way.
It will have to stay that way I'm afraid.
Mental note:- try not to hit anything too hard.

I'm a bit further down the coast than you, approximately in the middle of a triangle formed by Bangor, Llanberis and Caernarfon.
I'll try the door switch thing tomorrow and report back.

I thought the only LED on the dash was the MIL . It was on mine anyway:thumbs

Somewhere round Llanrug area then I suppose , all the info I have put in has been on recent posts as I have xtrail not terrano & noticed these in passing

That's about right Iain, 2 miles to Llanrug.
Had a quick look at the light switch thing and I can't even see a switch on the Terrano but then I was only looking in passing while reinforcing the bash plate on the front.
SWMBO has an 04 XTrail so I will file that one for the future.

Was A terrano posting & if door switch is same is the rubber covered interior light actuation switch on the pillar :thumb2

Had a proper look and found it now I can't see the warning with taking the dash apart again :doh
