My gearbox is F***ed, anyone any good with gearboxes? I don't want to just replace it with a second hand box as this is the second one I've put in the truck already, so I'd rather fix the problem?!?! Just phoned my local gearbox/ engine reconditioners and he wants £2000+ to recon engine and £1500+ to recon gearbox... Don't think he'll get my business

Try this guy.
[email protected] Although he's in France (as I am) he has a good UK source.
He specialises in 4x4 gearbox reconditioning/exchange. He got me one shipped from his source in the UK to France, 2 years ago for 750 quid plus my duff box.
Of course fitting was extra.

Trottster, I'm more interested in that type of thing to be honest. Not just the money saving but more the satisfaction that you've done it yourself. How hard was it?

A good gearbox Reconditioners is David Beaumont of Halifax been going for years
i have had Landrover gearboxes rebuilt, also had my terrano gearbox exchanged,
been in 2 years now towed my caravan up and down the Country, been off roading no problems. He dont fit them its on a exchange for your old one.
not worth risking one from a scrap yard. give him a ring you will be suprised.
He arranged courier For £20 to North Lincs)01422 244587

Laurie Ash (mention my name i might get a discount next time:lol)

Just had my gearbox repaired, main fault was the input bearing but it feels more like a new gearbox.
The local HGV repairers I used (OK apart from the oily boots) removed the gearbox and took it to Stephen Brear in Leeds for repair, the company does not have a website I can find but they are listed on the internet. As they had to drive to the far side of Leeds to deliver and collect the gearbox I can only assume they have used the firm a lot in the past and the repairs are reliable, only time will tell.
