Well I thought id start another rebuild thread as ive decided I want to keep my terrano for the foreseeable future, So as I love the thing I think its only right I do good by it and make sure that it has a tip top heart under the bonnet. Ive recently picked up a complete engine and gearbox inc transfer box for £200, Its only got 80k on it and probably doesnt warrant a stripdown but because I can and want to learn more its getting surgery. The plan is to strip the engine down and replace anything that im not happy with im also going to give the fuel system the once over including stripping the injectors and either replacing the nozzles or re-lapping them whichever they need. Im going to photo and document everything I do and post it in this thread as and when I do it so it can possibly help the forum in the future. So enough talk and on with the pics.

Stage one get a beer and remove ancillaries:

Which leaves me with:

Im hopefully going to pull the head off tomorrow night and get it into work for a strip and assess, Dont worry ill include all the pics of the machining work as well for reference. Wish me luck.

I will be watching this tread with great interest, lapping injectors! you must be a very experienced diesel guy, Rick

Cheers Rick, Ill be keeping it updated with pics as frequently as I can but there is no time limit so could be 6 weeks or 6 months ill try to include part numbers etc: with any parts I order all for the cause.

Well as I said I pulled the head off tonight and the more I look at this engine the more impressed I get.

Its bloody spotless in there for 80k its more like 8000, There is no wear on the valves at all its looking like all this is going to need is a refresh.

Rocker shaft off.

Look at that head face ill have to get a straight edge on it but doubt it needs a skim.

And the block is the same apart from a bit of surface corrosion in the bores but it will get a nice hone before the pistons go back in.

And going slightly off topic its not everyday you get asked to skim a 1930's rolls royce head now thats a bit special.

The first Lister gen set I had here 1975 vintage had been a standby set for many years then purchased by someone off grid like me, they ran it for around 10 years before I got it, from memory it had done around 14000 hours, so I pulled a head to have a look and the honing marks were still visible, that was an SR2 ran it till someone set it on fire, replaced it with an SDMO with a Mitsy 3 cylinder, absolutely useless, would not run my air compressor, not long after I got it the alternator failed, got 50% of the cost of a new one under warranty and just over a year later that also failed, so lucky enough found a ST3 and bought it same vintage 1975, my only fear is insulation failure on the alternator but the engine will last me out, knew you were well into the good stuff, oh and as a bit on the side you need some pointing doing, Rick

Simple engineering at its best Rick those old listers are cracking work horses, We do a lot of work for some salad farmers who bring us 6 cylinder perkins engines with in excess of 20,000 hours on mainly used in irrigation pumps now that reliability. We also do a lot of quarry equipment as well.

Gets a bit big when its a 16ltr 6 cylinder puts the trolls to shame :lol

Would that be the 6.354, I cut my teeth on those, even won the South of England Perkins fitter of the year championship 1972, Rick

That would be the one rick along with the 4.236 and the odd p3 thrown in for good measure.

Interested in the injector strip and rebuild,

May be the answer to my emission problem

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread too Luke  :thumbs

Sorry I missed your PM about image hosting mate, had so many PM's to catch up with, my Inbox was full to the brim :lol

Looks like you've sussed it now though :thumb2

Evening gents, Well ive not done much recently as im mad busy at work but i have managed to strip the head so as it stands ive re-cut the valves and lapped them in just need some stem seals now and I can build it back up.

Look at those seats :) perfectly uniform nice engine to work on for once.

Well today comes and I find a treat at work... A full set of genuine nissan TD27 valve stem seals in the stores still packed and sealed in the Nissan bag. Im sorry guys but didnt have enough time to photo them being installed but thats easy enough to imagine but hey it on the surface grinder.

And so we begin...

First pass..

And finally we end up with a flat smooth face.

Now before anyone asks about the lines that are left I will explain, As the cylinder head is made of cast iron which is soft the pre-combustion chambers are made of steel which is a hell of a lot harder than the head so it drags the stones over the face causing them to overheat. It might look unsightly but it is still better than the original factory finish. Now to order my gaskets and get the bottom end to work.

Looks like you have some really good equipment at your disposal. Great job
