Okay, apologies in advance for what is going to be a really divvy question to some of you. I've done a search and I'm pretty sure this is the engine oil sump plug, but can someone just confirm it? I'm doubting myself because when I bought all the stuff the stuff I got a spare sump plug just in the case (I like to cover all eventualities, like losing stuff) and the one the shop gave me is way smaller than this one on the car..which is 22mm, if that helps at all.

Again, sorry for what I'm guessing is a really tiresome question, but I just want to make sure I don't make a monumental error and I've read that some of you have ended up undoing the front diff instead by mistake.

I'm also falling to the lurgy that has stricken the family for the past few weeks, so little initial doubts are morphing into paranoia, lol. It has mutated into man flu after all...

So, could someone please confirm this is the engine oil sump plug? Thanks in advance.

Hi, best to confirm which engine you have, and if petrol or diesel first.:thumb2

As Rustic says, we need a bit more info...

Just to say though, that I have a 1999 2.7TDi, and it has the large 22mm sump plug, but my wife's 2001 2.7TDi, only has a 14 or 15mm one.

I am struggling looking at your picture to work out where that is exactly, as it looks like it is right over to one side of the engine, where as on both our T2's, if you get down on your hands and knees, and look under the front, it is pretty much in the middle, behind the diff...

Okay, thanks, I'll endeavour to get underneath and take a better photo when it's not dark /sleeting. :thumbs

The plug in the pic is in line with the front wheels and felt warm enough after idling to be the engine oil, so I'm pretty sure it is and the shop has given me the wrong plug as a spare, but I'll get another pic up when I can.

On my 2.7 Td, I have the under protective cover, and there is a removable panel, and behind that is the sump plug, so no need to remove the under tray.

Mine is more to the driver's side of centre facing forward, and tilted downwards, slightly, so if the Tdi is the same, you have found it lol.:thumb2

yes that is the sump plug, and I have got same man flue effin aufull, Rick

Thanks, guys!

Rick, you have my complete sympathy. I am just getting back on my feet now. After spending the weekend in bed as a shivering, sweating and groaning invalid I managed to get to work yesterday, where my colleagues kindly gave me the easy stuff to do...although I suspect that might have been more to do with the fact it kept me and my coughing carcass away from them...

Anyway, more with it today, so hopefully well enough by the weekend to get this damn oil change done. You wait, there'll be a storm or something now...

Thanks again for confirming that plug :thumb2
