another gearbox question

HI all

Gearbox in my 2004 2.7tdi manual sounds terrible and a gearbox place reckon around £500 to rebuild if its just the bearings but if its the shaft or something else (cant remember what he said) then the box is scrap.

He said being the later model it has the bigger gearbox and generally dont suffer from the bearing trouble like the earlier ones??

So im thinking of picking up another box and putting that in instead of ripping mine open but what gearbox fits these because the ebay ads are all over the place with compatibility. some list from 98 - 2004 and some list from 97-02

And will a box from a 3.0 fit or are they completely different

Any help would be appreciated

It's not an oil leak, it's self regulating

I think the boxes as the same from 1996 (twin headlight models) to 2005, I know the earlier ones pre 1996 had a slightly different gear ratio
