ok having just bent my 6th steering idler

ive had a thought. what if you replace the steering idler with a second power steering pump (left hand drive of course)

could you connect them both to work together
or
would the main one drag the other one around
or
?????? ideas ??????

if it can be done ...you couldnt bend that if you wanted to, and it would make them pretty indestructable

any ideas anyone ????????:bow:bow:bow

Is you steering idler still mounted in the original position or have you lowered it? What bit bends?

ok the idler is made up of 2 sections the bit that bolts to the chassis with 3 bolts .....and the bit that attaches to the relay bar

its the rod bit of the part that fits to the chassis that keeps bending

ive spoken to a few people who recon the theory of a second pump instead of an idler is very possible.... either piped up to work as 2 or keep the original as the pump and have the second on a closed circit and use it as a damper

any thoughts anyone.... bet toolbox knows the answer

Would be a good idea i reckon :thumbs

yes knew you could make something like that, terra showed me a download somewhere.

trouble is if i make one its going to cost a fair whack to get it made then id want it machine welded , not by the geezer down the road:doh

yes i can see it working but i used to bend them with 31" tyres on, now im on 35" tyres it is bending with real ease.
seems to be when the steerring gets pulled out of my hand and it shoots round to full lock, it just bends in one hit.

had hoped the extra steering box will dampen it and prevent it jumping out of my hand and shooting to full lock with such force. as well as being 3-4 times thicker....

this theory is based on the fact ive never bent a steering box... it just made me think of another route

colin, seriously....its just a bit of cut plate, with two bends, three holes and half an inch of weld. It would cost twopence to get made up by a local engineering firm, might even be cheaper to get a few made up and sell them on.

Why not take them that photo and some measurements - nothing to lose in asking.....

Oh and don't forget to deduct the cost of six idler arms as well will you!

Just 1 thing...

If you solve the problem by strengthening or customizing the near side,as annoying as it is,it might then bend or break a different more expensive part
