Annoying noise from boot area

Another 'annoying noise' thread to add to my arsenal! (there's a theme here!)

When I hit 75, or more accurately when i decelerate from 75, I get a weird and very irritating interior knocking / rattle from what sounds like the inside of the boot access door - I havent been able to check for sure while driving (obviously!) but anyone have any pointers as to what it may be, and at the same time how to stop the door from sounding like its going to undo itself as well!!

People have reported problems with the spare wheelholder, either small welds shearing or just general friction. Put some penetrating oil around the mount where it contacts the door, and se if that helps. Some guys have drilled out the spotwelds & replaced with nuts & bolts as a cure.

Had a lot of rattles from that area, still have some but only over very rough surfaces.
Worst offender turned out to be a padlock hidden under the spare wheel cover; it secured the wheel--anti theft wise!
Another was badly fitting door--cured that by adjusting door locking bracket .
Two down ?????to go.
Turn the radio up a couple of notches 'till I find the rest.

the radio trick works as far as it goes - just hate unlocated rattles - expecially the door wobble - i will have to have a go at adjusting - any tips? It does seem a little loose.

hi ive had a problem with intermittent noise for years normaly goes away when sheila gets out. :?

To "tighten" my back door I just loosened the two large cross-head screws which hold the striker plate (U shaped jobbie), pushed the plate towards front of the waggon then tightened up VERY tightly using a square shafted cross-point driver with a spanner on the shaft to assist.
The plate still worked its way backwards slightly even after thorough tightening so I re adjusted it and applied some superglue between plate and bodywork. Seems to be holding now. :roll:

It might sound silly but it's not your jack moving about is it :roll: i'm sure mine is as I get a rattle now & again from that area but it'll stop like that for now as I will have to remove part of my boot install to get to it
The way we used to track rattles down was to have someone in the back to lissen, prod & poke about when it came on & you've gussed it I was the one who mainly had to get into the boot of cars :evil: :evil: :evil:

I sold my Terrano, I cant hear it rattle anymore... :lol: I wont have to throw anymore money at it either.....:lol: :roll:

Trouble is i miss it... wish i hadn't sold it really, but that is another story....

Our rattle, (I'm convinced but hubby isn't) is the seat at the back when it is up it really rattles-down (as a seat) no rattle! :roll: :roll:

My Whole car rattles! Wipers squeek, Child seats rattle and there are knocks all over.

however I know she is still running fine when I can hear them.

The most annoying noise I had once was my mother in the back complaining about the rattles. Se said can you stop these annoying noises.... I said yep "If you get out" :lol:

Will have to do the sit in boot trick over the weekend. its not the jack (although i did think it might be so wrapped it in a towel to be sure).

If it's speed related, it could well be wheel balance. Lots of people say you dont need to balance rear wheels, but it does help keep the shakes and rattles down.

Hi,

Could well be rear wheel balance - one of my rear wheels is slightly buckled enough not to balance and car shakes at 60-70 mph - most of the vibration is picked up by the spare wheel mount and cover.

Another one I've heard to watch out for is rear prop shaft run-out (imbalance)

Hi Quarryman, (and any other rattling good club members)
Found a LOUD source of back end rattling today.
Comes from the back door restraining bar. The one which CHOPS YOUR FINGERS OFF if you're not careful.
SEE THE WARNING NOTICE PUT THERE BY NISSAN
Don't recommend doing this on a very windy day for obvious reasons, however--- if you open the back door and jiggle the restraining bar up and down you will probably find (if it is like mine was) that there is lots of play at the door end. This looseness is enough to cause the bar, which is fairly heavy, to rattle about when shaken on rough terrain.
How to take up this play ? Difficult to see a remedy because of sliding parts and clearances required so I got brutal and did the following.
Used a large adjustable spanner on the bar and levered it until it was permanently twisted about five / ten degrees. This has the effect of making the door-end spigot tighten up against the sides off its running slot and stops it rattling around but does not stop the spigot sliding. Just makes it a SLIGHTLY stiffer to move.

It all sounds a bit crude I suppose but I don't give a tinkers' . It has cured my most annoying rattle without any obvious detrimental effect.No doubt there could be much better ways of dealing with this rattle but I think that identifying it was the hardest bit.
Hope some others can benefit. Would be interesting to hear if you do.

Dont you just hate it when that happens!
Put the seats down on sunday to take the mountain bike for a spin and left them down this week - seems to have cured the interior rattle that was driving me insane. The 75mph knocking from the rear door must be down to one of the rear wheels being warped or something - they have all been balanced and still the vibration at 75mph just need to work out how to tighten the door........
