Guys,

My car broke down today, no power !

I jumped started it 3 times, drove well over 20min and had a 1h30 trip, but again battery was empty.

Battery is pretty new (3 months)

I believe it is a alternator, I need a new one urgently, and wonder what you would advice in the mean time (buy another battery and jump it for a few days ?)

Where can I buy one and is it easy to fix.

Check all connections on alternator and also the red ignition warning light bulb, this bulb feeds the excitation to the alternator, if the bulb goes then the alternator doesn't charge.

jump start it remove jump leads check volts at batt with meter ,should be 14 ish volts.

If I remember correctly from Briggie's (and I may not) the alternator also drives the vacuum pump so not just any old alternator will do, but as has been stated do you have a battery warning light if not the do that first, then check the voltage running, it should be around 14 if you do not have a meter then turn your headlights on and the rev the engine a bit you should see a raise in brightness, most motor factors will have or be able to get next day an alternator, and do not forget, you have a new battery, but every time you flatten it you drastically reduce its life, Rick

Hi Guys,

All connections are ok, battery Volt is fine but just completely discharge after each trip (recharge the battery with a external charger) . the car dash bulbs are red, but the car does not turn over without a plugin the jump leads to another car. then it's just run fine.

I have forgotten the amount of times I have used it on neighbours and friends cars.

I just bough one.

I am on the side of road at the moment waiting for the AA.

all electrics are crazy now, when I brake Air bag light is on, then when switch on the head lights teh engine switch off, when using indicator they go from very slow to very fast, when having parking lights the rev clock goes to zero !!!!

now everything is dead...... so P**** Off.

bloody hell, that sounds like a bad connection somewhere, could even be the main cable to the alternator, but AA will probably check everything and get to the bottom of it, good luck!

Diesels using very little battery power (unlike petrol spark ignition) so given your other posts after this one, I suspect some other electrical problem rather than charging....

really tired and just home. The AA said it is the alternator, he tested everything he could with similar tester.

It is in the garage, and at this stage I will let them do the work...... will let you know

I had a similar problem with my electrics going mental it turned out it was the alternator i got a replacement for milner offroad :thumb2 easy to fit an hour tops.
