Alternator belt snapped

Evening All. Was out in the Terrano today and noticed that it was becoming harder to start it as the day went on. As if the battery was getting flatter each time I started up. I had a new Bosch battery a few months ago and had changed the glow plugs recently and it now normally starts on the button. So I feared the alternator may be on the way out, also as its so cold I thought that may be a factor.

Anyway approaching home the "battery shaped" warning light came on. I parked up with engine running and looked under bonnet and the alternator belt had snapped. The other belt (power steering?) was okay and operating as normal.

I have bought a new belt but looking from the top of the engine down it doesn't look too obvious how to change, well not to me anyway.

Does anyone have any simple instructions or pointers to change the belt?

straight forward, on the top of the alternator you will see an adjusting bracket going back to the cylinder head, at the alternator end is a 14mm bolt, loosen this off and with a bar about 3 ft long push the alternator back towards the engine, my memory is such shit that I cannot remember if the alternator belt is on the centre crank pulley or if it is the PS one, I have a feeling it is, so you will need to remove the PS belt first, similar situation undo the pinch bolt then to the left you will see a long threaded adjusting bolt undo this (anti clock) until you can get the belt off, feed over the fan blades, refitting is just a reversal of this, Rick
