Alternator and heat plugs

Hi Guys,

Got the new alternator but have some serious problem, I am 2 weeks with no car :nenau

If I am correct the alternator send power to the plugs for a few seconds and then switch of. But now it just does not and teh plugs gets really hot and will certainly burn the alternator up.

Check your glow plug relay solenoid thingy
It's in the wing next to the battery, it's a common fault. Sometimes the wires just corrod away. Easy fix though, good luck

Plugs

My relay went a few weeks ago but it was the opposite - no heat.Check your connections carefully as sounds like a direct load on the alternator.Unlikely as it may seem you may have a couple of wires switched.The glow plug relay is behind the battery and cost me £40 from a local spares outlet.

Wrong!! The alternator has nothing to do with the heater plugs, It's only job is to keep the battery charged. all the electric power comes from the battery. The heater plugs are fed from a relay and they will get red hot. Why did you change the alternator and what fault were you trying to fix???

alternator died 2 weeks ago and sent it to be refurbished. But they boulde not so got the new one above. It seems it just does not switch of like they do usually and just get really really hot.

ECU/Computer decides how long heaters stay on for, relay is controlled by ecu not like old cars with a timer relay.
i have checked on mine and heaters do stay on a long time after startup, they come on and off untill temp is reached, forgotten how hot, but it is in manaul.

On the TD the heaters are not controlled via the ECU, they are controlled via a seperate module, that has an input from one of the temperature sensors on the thermostat housing. The module decides how long the glow plugs are on.

The temperature sensors on the TD are as follows,
Nearest at the front: Sensor for the EGR.
Middle : Sensor for the temperature gauge.
Rear most: Sensor for the glow plug module.


They are not cycled off and on ( Maybe on Tdi version), see my previous thread.
There are in fact 2 relays, one on cold start and the other stays on a bit longer via a resistor, thus reducing the power to the glow plugs..

What gets hot? The alternator? there's no switch on the alternator! if you mean the glow plugs they do get really really really HOT!!

better explained

The alternator is working fine. But the heater plug do not switch off.

My mechanic just installed a small button than I press for a few second to warm up the car and then start the engine.

I would prefer the car to work normally.
