Hello, the altenator belt has just snapped on my Terrano but it was a little strange.

I was going down a small track and it became hard to change gear so I stoppped and could not get any gear. So i turned it off and selected 2nd and drove home, but on the way home the battery light came on and the water in diesel light came on.

Got it home (only 2 miles) popped the bonnet and noiced the belt had snapped.

How can the belt be related to clutch and water in diesal light???

Thanks

Gavin

Hi Gavin, I'm assuming that your T2 is a diesel (put ya details in ya signature). I really can't understand it either, the alternater has a brake vacuum pump on the back of it so I could understand brakes not being the same. Was it def the water in fuel light that was on and not the engine management light?

I managed to get a belt from Halfords I was amazed they never have items when I normally need them.

I found out why the belt snapped, there was loads of string wrapped around the pulleys, must have picked it up on the lane.

Fitted the belt and all is fine again.

very strange, I am sure it is the water in the fuel filter light and the clutch pedal only had a short travel when the belt was snapped. All very strange, I will up date my profile

The string might have been from the webbing in the belt. Main thing is your sorted out and all is well again.

Another alternator belt

Talking about belts--I've had to let mine out one notch since Christmas dinner. Start the diet next year !!
Seriously; my alternator belt is looking a bit past its best before date so I bought a new one a couple of weeks ago. Thought it would be a five minute job (as described by others) to fit it but found that the PS pump/fan belt is in the way. Now looks more like a 60 minute+ job. It was perishing cold at the time so I put the job on the back burner until the weather improves.
I am puzzled about how others do the job so quickly when it looks to me as though it needs the fan/PS belt loosening off and setting aside in order to pass the alternator belt over the fan and other pulleys. Am I making the job more complex than needed or have I just missed something ?
Incidently, my alternator does not incorporate the vacuum pump, apparently it's built into the timing gear drive train.
Any tips about changing this belt would be welcome.

just my opinion, but i have allways changed both belts at the same time to avoid imbalancing the tension on the (problematic) water pump. It probably just my paranoia but probably worth considering
