I had a Terrano years ago on a P plate so I have some experience but looking at selling my motorbike and getting another Terrano as a towcar so I thought I'd join here to start some research!

Howdy sir, welcome to the forum, it's a great place here, all are friendly and will give you plenty of advise.

I don't tow so await further comments but I believe the lwb is better than the swb for towing. Depends on what you want to pull too.

I myself, have the 2.7 lwb 2004. It's a great motor and so forgiving.

There is no timing chain or belt to snap, no dual mass flywheel to clap about inside, just gear driven solid state inside :thumb2

Another great perk is what most of us run on (fuel wise)

I do about 40l of veg oil (new) then. Squirt of redex a squirt of two stoke oil and a splash of diesel to wash it all down :lol

Most of the mods are cheap to do and people here are more than happy to help :thumb2

Watch out for rust underneath when choosing your truck as this will be the most costly thing!! Even with the warning we give on here still, people end up with rust buckets :doh

No sunroof is better as there are no channels to rust up the sills (IMHO)

So yeah, happy hunting and good luck, really, rust! Check! :lol

Also once you are a payed member you get the key to aladdins wealth :augie

Towing

We tow with our 2.7 Terrano (2003)
We have a Burstner 1250kg.The Terrano pulls it with ease.This year we have been fully loaded in both Car and Caravan and been over the top of the Pyrenees to Spain.No climbing problems and behaved superbly.
I usually pull at around 60mph and get a return of around 23/24 mpg.

Also did normal drive test without caravan and returned 31.8 at 55/60 mph and 2500 revs.

All in all very pleased.

I think I win hands down for length of ownership for the same vehicle, and I still bore people telling them :doh:doh:doh
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...:thumb2

There are also members on here that have had Terranos of some sort for much longer.

There are still many owners on this site with original Terranos over 20 years old.:thumb2:thumb2

I've noticed a few 3.0di engined Terries for sale from around 02 onwards. Is it a much more advanced and refined engine from the 2.7?

I have had both and I prefer the 3.0l to the 2.7, I find it's smoother and is better on fuel.
The 3.0 can't use veg oil, if that's what your looking at using, I now add a smidgen of 2 stroke oil to the fuel tank, I find it runs a bit cleaner.
The old 3.0 engines had issues, but the latter ones fitted to Terries are more sorted.
There is talk of the 3.0 having a timing chain, but it appears that it's a chain driven pump in the engine, fuel I believe and timing.
Both engines are good to go.
Rust is a big thing with these trucks though.

Welcome aboard, as said lwb is better for towing and the manual has a higher towing weight. Ive no experience of the 3litre but seems ok.

Yes rust can be a pain. Points to look for are the sills inner and outer and the rear wheel arch there is a bolt which is the seat belt mount. There are other spots but they are the worst spots. That said they weld up and are ok, Ive just had my 1996 welded and it cost me £200 for inner and outer sills on both sides.

Used to tow with mine and it was a dream to tow with.

I cant slate the 3.0 as I have no experience of it, but the 2.7 is a train! No chain or belt and no dual mass malarky! And it runs in veg if you so choose :thumb2

Less fuel economic than the 3.0 but the 3.0 cant run on veggie so 2.7 wins on cost if you plan to be a veggie man :lol

Chain shouldn't ever be an issue on the 3.0 as it only runs the cams (everything else is gear driven) and according to cncfabs the 3.0 Terrano is a solid flywheel, only the Trols were lucky enough to be blessed with a DMF... :doh

As above bud it's just the cams driven by a chain. The chain drives off the pump but the pump itself is gear driven as is everything else in the 3.0 engine :thumb2
