Should i buy a 1997 Ford Maverick 2.7 with almost 250000 miles ?

If your terrano has spent most of its life in inland Portugal you should find that you will not have problems with rust----- our friends in UK will be a little envious!!!!!!!!
I don't know if you have seen on here but we recently bought a Terrano 1_-----------we live near Oliveira do Hospital-------- what area of Portugal do you live????------- have you written your post in English or is it translated?????, I have posted on Portugal Terrano forum but have to post in English and rely on translate to turn it into Portuguese!!!!! Afraid we don't know enough Portuguese yet!! But we are trying to learn more!!
Do you just change the tyre size then inform the car registration people-------ours had wide wheels/tyres but have been changed to 205x16, both sizes are on the car papers

Yes, i have to adjust.
I write english (not translated) in english foruns and portuguese in portuguese foruns.

I just have this Terrano since early this early. The petrol engine was a risk but he as been a very nice surprise.

About the tyre sizes, it's a risk.
Tyres similar to the stock size, usually the police or inspecion centers doesn't care, unless they are in a bad mood.

It's my case at the moment, in the papers i only have 215/80 R15 but i have 235/75 R15.

To make the new tyres legal i have to spend +/- 75€ to get the homologation papers from Nissan and a extra 65€ to redo the terrano papers.

I live on the North, Braga.

Well, a couple more photos from the last 2 weeks.

Last weekend, there was mud, mud and more mud.
But with small tyes i can get stuck in the ditches made by bigger tyres!!! :D

After that i good wash (outside and inside) and back in the garage to be ready for next week.
 
And about the front wheel buzz, it continues.

I dismount the bug, brakes and driveshaft.
All looks good, and installed everything again. No change!

I'm not a mechanic, so maybe i have to let a mechanic do his job!!! :augie
 
Well, it has been a good run but now it's time to sell the Terrano...



... only to replace it (maybe) with a Ford Maverick! :D

Not much of a change, but i need your coments before i buy it.


Ford Maverick LWB (7 seater) 2.7TD (125hp) from 1997/12.
The problem: almost 400000km (250000 miles).

Does the engine, and other parts, deserve my confidence?

I won't do many of miles with, just some offroad tracks around 100Km on a weekend.


Should i stay or should i go?

Now that you have got your Terrano well sorted it seems a shame to sell it!!!
If you are going to continue running off road a LWB will probably not perform as well and I think have a greater risk of vehicle damage!!
I bought a Seat Alhambra for its seven seats---- I didn't realise the later Terrano/maverick came with seven seats!!! The Alhambra is proving to be a bad buy!!!!!
I will keep our Terrano 1 till I die if at all possible!!!!!!!! But need seven seats for airport runs for family!!!!! And the Terrano does not have A/C which we do like in the summer!!!!!

I had a Seat Alhambra and sold it a couple of weeks ago, and to avoid having two cars, the best choice is a 7 seater 4x4.

For the last few weeks i'm searching many options, Mitsubishi Pajero (allready had one, the 2.8), Hyundai Galloper and of course Terrano/Mavericks.

For now i like this very much, not too expensive and in very good shape outside and inside.

My doubt is the 250000miles on it!

The key would be how the engine runs and how much identified problems would cost to fix. It's difficult for us to say, let's see/hear it running and then make a decision.

I did exactly the oposite, i sold a Seat Alhambra (year 2000 model) and she gave me a lot of problems.

I, usually, don't get to attached to my cars.
I like them, i take good care of them (well, the 4x4s do suffer a bit :naughty ) but i don't mind selling them and try another models and brands.

Tomorrow the current owner will leave the Maverick in my work place, so i can check the car with time before i decide.


If i do keep it, i will transfer some good to the Maverick.
Wheels and tyres, spaces, cb radio and the extra part for the idler arm.

Choices choices... :)

I will have the Maverick for a couple of hours tomorrow so i can do that.
A mechanic will have a look around to see if something sounds terrible wrong.

No, everything i had it was sent with the new buyer.

Mine was the facelift version.

Well.

Just spend one hour around the Ford.

I liked almost everything.

However several, small, stuff to correct:
- AC not cooling
- Inside lights (the ones that light up when you open the doors)
- The front end has some problems, the front grille has all the supports broken, inside the bumper something is loose.
- Etc...

The clutch it's ok.
The engine sounds good.
But accelerating (hard) in neutral some times he sputters a little bit and coff a little bit of white smoke.

(The diesel tank was almost empty and i don't know when it was serviced)

The external and inside are very good.

Underneath was very good, didn't have any signs of hard off roading.

Nothing else obvious came up, but still, almost 250000 miles.

To compare, in Portugal, these 7 seaters (Ford or Nissan 1997/1998) are selling for around 5000€ to 6000€. Usually with around 155000 miles.
This one i should by it for around 3200€.

It's a go? Or it's better to way for another?

Congratulations mate I’m sure it’ll serve you well.

You’ll sort all the little niggles easy enough I’m sure, I’ve heard it said that the Mavs of that age were better than the Terranos but not too sure as I had and still have a Terrano from that era and have to say they have and the one still is a super car. Only problem is the salt in winter that rots our vehicles in the UK. I reckon first thing is to give it a good service with good parts and good fluids, don’t forget the rear diff oil being genuine LSD oil not just gear oil as I doubt it will of been changed. Try replacing pollen filter to see if that sorts the aircon.
