Ok. Flat battery. Charged it. Flat again. Atlternator only kicking out 12.4. Needs replacing/refurbishing. This will be done............

However I'm puzzled. I jump started the Patrol with the Rav4 whilst the battery was totally flat. Started with no prolem. Left it to run for a few minutes - but when I disconnected the jump leads the Patrol stopped abruptly.

Why is this? Is there some sort of solenoid which needs some capacity in the battery to carry on running? Is it something to do with the NATS security?

Answers on the back of a £10 note please :D.............

no power in the battery nowt coming out of the alternator so when you took off the jump leads I guess the fuel valve closed as it would when you turn off the ign switch so the engine stopped, I may be wrong........ I often am says my wife... regards bri

I would have thought the the Rav would have put some energy back into the Patrol battery, and shouldn't have stopped straight away.

So I guess your battery could be wrecked, so I would charge the battery,
there could be a faulty cell in the battery.

I have known alternator diodes to fail and flatten a battery overnight with a 3 amp current draw.

So a bit more investigation required with a multimeter.

Also if the ignition bulb has failed, it won't energise the field in the alternator, so the output will be zero
