Hi everyone,

Havent been on here for a while but the air con on my 1999 T2 has never worked and i have traced it down to an electrical fault as the pump works when i supply it with 12v at the pump,
So my question is:
Is the relay the sencond from the back in the fuse box in the engine bay ?

Simple one but check your belt as well.....probably never been changed or tightened much....

There are two relays as far as the a/c is concerned. The first indeed is in the engine bay fuse box, along with a fuse. This one fires up the condensor fan. There is also a fuse in the interior fuse box (10a) which will be at fault if the recirc and ac switch led's do not light up.

Secondly, after passing through the low pressure and high pressure cut out switches, the compressor is triggered by a 2nd relay down the side of the battery. It is the rear one of the two.

Now both the condensor fan, and a/c clutch are under the control of the ECU as when you press the a/c button, the condensor fan is fired up first, and the clutch about 2 seconds later.

Are you sure your system has gas ????

Tim.

No Tim Not checked yet but its never worked since i got it (6 mths) but will check to see if there is any in the system as i know there might be a low pressure switch that might stop the system. but i checked the fuse in the interior fuse box and thats ok and the light illuminates.
will def check the pressure later (As i'm at work atm)

Thanks

WHAT on line when at work TUT TUT :augie:augie

The very quickest way (and no doubt h&s would have a fit) it to see if the schrader charging valve hisses ;) If it doesn't, don't waste your time on any more electrical checks :thumb2

I would say the low pressure switch has opened and cut out the compressor to lack of gas.

Dont run the compressor bypassed as you will bugger it (if not already done so)

Get it vac'ed & gassed with dye and then repair the leak.

It will either be the condensor, or one of the two pipes that have the rubber sleeves on and be leaking under the sleeves, as mine is at the moment!!

A quick test you can do before you shell out on a re-gas is to short across the terminals to the pressure switch, this should bring in the compressor clutch when a click will be heard, this should work with the ignition, blower and AC switched on, if you try with the engine running, only do it momentarily, if it works it’s a duff pressure switch or no gas.

Will do. Just need to find someone who can add acouple of crimped connectors to the alloy pipe ends, a length of rubber inbetween and away we go!

I agree that £65+ for a bit of alloy pipe 20inches long is crazy!

When I get around to it I was going to go to B&Q (after careful measuring up :augie ) and see what compression fittings they have.
