OK so mine hasn't worked since around December time so I can assume there will be no or little gas in there. Does anyone know if there is a DIY refill with dye so that I can check for leaks?

Jim

Halfrauds too. Theyre sometimes on offer but unlikely this time of year :(

what does air con and microsoft have in common ???

they both dont work when you open windows

I used dye in a commercial freezer to try and find the leak, never saw any dye ever, got a gas sniffer that did not work either, decided that the compressor/condenser had to be bad so changed it, been running now for nearly a year no problem I visually checked the old unit and not a sign of green dye anywhere and it would loose gas in about a month, I have had 4 Citroen Xantia's all with air con all had dye in them all leaked, never saw any dye, just my experience, Rick

If thats the that case youre either extraordinarily unlucky or need some new glasses ;)

Thats aside from proving what a crock xantias ultimately were :lol:lol:lol

hmmmm.... I will try another test sunday but cannot understand why the guage I put on the filler valve says the pressure is ok, the compressor kicks in (it didnt before the regas a while ago) but no colder??? Also is it normal for the tickover to go up and down a bit when the aircon is on??? also if i leave the presure guage attached whilst the aircon is on it seems to pulse from no pressure to ok and back again???

pressure gauge does not tell you how much gas you have in your system it is the weight of liquid that counts, imagine a propane bottle almost empty or full the pressure will be the same, you check to see if it is empty by lifting it up and assessing its weight or feeling for the slosh of liquid, you should have a sight glass on the top of the filter, when the compressor is engaged it should be clear of air bubbles, Rick

I probably need new eyes, Rick

You will get peaks and troughs of pressure on most simple fluid systems. The only way to avoid that is to start fitting accumulators.

As Rick says , its by weight (which will affect the volume and pressure). Any decent garage will measure what comes out of your system when they empty it . The last time our local place did mine it was simple............next to f all :thumb2

This might sound daft but have you tried replacement Pollen Filter? if this is blocked there wont be much air flow so the air wont blow in the first place to get cold?

Jim

popped in to kwik fit today just to see how much they would charge and to see if it didnt recharge i wound not have to pay the £49 and they said yes that still stands well i thought what the hell booked it in there and then left car there for 1hr went back and nice and cold air con now mine just needed regasing the guy said that there was some pressure still in there but not enough will keep and eye on it but when i tryed my pressure gauge on it before it was recharged that showed low pressure so know mine just needed regassing loving it now hope urs is just a regas too :thumb2

well played about with it on sunday... firstly the compressor clutch would not engage (guess no pressure in system?) so I added some more stuff to it (big refill can from Halfrauds), would guess about 8-9 oz as it was an 18oz can and about half full?.... seems to now be coming out a bit cold and pressure is steady around the 25psi area... also the right pipes are hot/cold now:thumb2:thumb2... suspect it has a leak as I did refill it in September last and seems like it was all gone ??? Tempted to get a full overhaul of the ac (place near me will do it for about £70 all in) and see if its worth fixing?. Obviously dodgy seals etc might relubricate with an overhaul but any component leaks will make it too expensive (unless they are easuily accesable to fix like pipes etc). Could do the kwik fit route but not sure they will pressure test with dye etc... I would like to know if it is buggered

kwik fit machine vac test first before it puts anything in as a vac is harder to seal than pressure mine has been lovly and cold today if u had it toped up in sept last year could be leak top metal pipe as it goes around rad has been known to leak at the rubber clamp as when the engine is idling that pipe does shake abit or hopefully for u aircon will loose pressure anyway even if there is no big leaks if that makes sense

Im certain they do use dye :thumb2 I went to a bloke round the corner from our loacl Kwik fit who was undercutting them :thumb2

Pays to shop around , I managed to persuade one bloke to just recharge it whihc is cheaper and faster , but not the best thing to do, when i was farting about with the system :thumb2

yeah, it IS cheap BUT, you take the car to HIM, so he must be saving on fuel etc.

For that price, i am gonna ring him and take my Mazda, because if it does turn out to be some other issue, at least its only £25 lost (i.e. if it all leaks out a few days later) where as with Kwik Fit, if they get it filled and it gets cold then you pay your £49 but still risk it leaking out later....

im tempted to buy this, but witha view to them recharging my own system in the future, what do you think? takes dye kits, stop leak etc...so fo the cost of this, plus a can of refrigerant and oil, its comparable to kuick fit nearly..
