As you may have seen in another thread, I am looking to change my tyres and would like some advice on what size and make to go for.
Currently I have BFG 285/75/16 A/T's. These come up at 33" compared with the standard tyre which is about 31". The largest BFG M/T's are 305/70/16 which again are 33". I have a 4" lift, so there is no problem with space for the tyres.
There seem to be a few of you out there running on 36" or 37" tyres :D. How do these perform? Do you notice a reduction in performance, acceleration or braking?
Finally, what are good makes for both off road and on road. I do a fair mileage on the road, to and from the off road areas and so need them to be OK on the road as well.
Any thoughts would be welcome
Ian

I'll put this in the relevant post now:D
I would recommend 35 x12.50 x 16's they will give you a further 1.5" of axle clearance and are the equivalent of a 315 wide Tyre.

Any taller than that and your gearing for towing will be all to pot.

I'm sure if you look around you will find BFG mudS in that size, once you pass the 315/70/16 size the dimensions move to inches. 32, 33, 35 and 37 being the overall diameter/ height in inches and 10.5, 12.5, 13.5, 15 being the width in inches.

There are several worthy makes;
Hankook Dynapro MT's
Cooper Discoverer STT's
BFG Mud 's

I would avoid the Maxis creepy crawlers as the road noise is ridiculous.

Surely it's better to not go too big if you pull big heavy trailers.

I thought 35" tyres are about the max you can go on a patrol before you have to think about different gearing at diffs or transfer box?

how would they perform with a big heavy trailer on the back?

Looking at your pic on the other thread bud it doesn't look like your diffs were grounded out (at least initially) so I'm not sure bigger tyres would make much difference :nenau

I'd definitely suggest going to mud tread if that's typical of the terrain but I think you also need to look at what you're trying to pull.

Pulling a loaded tri-axle through that sort of gloop is a big ask of any vehicle as there will be very little weight transfer onto the drawbar (and therefore transferring grip to the Trol's rear axle) compared with a single axle or even a double axle trailer. Most game trailers I see at the shoots, while big, are single axle trailers for that very reason.

Rather than sourcing even bigger tyres for the Trol I think a better idea would be to look at fitting wider/bigger tyres onto the trailer so that it floats over the ground better as from memory the standard rubber on those IW trailers are fairly narrow.

Yep that porridge you were in would still trip up Mts I guess. That said the Coopers are a wonderful compromise in a mud tyre. Go for those and drop your pressures in the goo BEFORE you get stuck ;) Size again I'd stay at 33s for road work or will end up one gear down a lot of the time.

If you find something and decide to sell the current tyres I would be happy to pay a fair price for them as I am looking to go to that size.

Am reasonably close to you in Letchworth Hertfordshire.

Kind regards

Russell.

Depending on wheel condition maybe just swop them over as my wheels refurbed approx. 5 months ago.

my post was just offering to buy ianinessex 285/75/16 if he buys another size as that is the size that I would like on my Patrol.

Kind regards

Russell.

I have finally made the decision on the tyres, and am staying with the 33" diameter. I am concerned that any bigger and I will struggle with the 3 tonne trailer.

BFG M/T 305/70/16's due this weekend. :D
