.... TDI T2 has started to make a rattle/knocking noise on tick over when up to working temp :(:(:( Started yesterday.... checked the oil, all ok... noise goes as soon as the clutch is depressed so....

my thoughts are big ends or main bearings, maybe the clutch or gearbox bearing?

Was perfect the day before and is fine until engine gets warm and after a little while driving starts to do this knock/rattle as the revs drop on tick over.... It's a 2002 model and too new to chuck away but cost of engine rebuild will be huge!

Any ideas from you learned folks.... due to rain I have not yet got under the truck to have a listen yet to where it is coming from but is a worrying noise ...guess a new fiter/oil change is the 1st step?

you have a genious on your doorstep virtually :naughty ... who loves the t2's:thumb2

if it stops on clutch depress then it is gear box/clutch related, nothing to do with the engine, thing is which? without hearing it I cannot say, Rick

I had a horrible rattling noise on my mav a few years ago.

This was the exhaust bracket that attaches to the side of the gearbox.
1 the clamp can have a crack in it.
2 the u bolt nuts work loose, so it is important to fit a second nut to act as a locking nut.

Worth checking, if it is this it will be the cheapest possible fix.

Ie 2 x M8 nuts.

Best regards,
Rustic

It's more likely your input shaft vibrating in gearbox. Once there is a bit of wear they can vibrate on tickover. As soon as throttle is touched it goes? How many miles on it? I have seen a couple of tdi with that and although it sounds bad I don't think it is worth repairing unless gearbox whines and main bearings need replacing anyway( if it is this)

This.

Mine does it, can't say I'm at all bothered, and I'm sure it has many tens of thousands of miles left.

I will drive mine untill it dies, then get a recon box, but I'd imagine that will be in a couple of years probably after I've sold it on.

if you rev your engine abit as the revs drop if the knock stops its not your big ends. i,de go with the other lads, or loose slave arm.

aye, mines the same. had new clutch recently, but thenoise persisted, sometimes it doesnt even do it. nothing to worry about IMO.

mine too my motor has a really annoying rattle & knock on tick over i thought same at first motors on its way out:doh money money , then i posted a comment on here loads got back to me saying clutch thrust bearing so i pressed the clutch in on tick over instantly it went silent:) im waiting till my clutch packs in all together but so far its still going strong 6 mths later , at least my worst fears were over i can cope with a clutch :)

Mine does this as well. I think it might be the layshaft, but I was told not to sweat about it to much.

That's what the AA is for :(

Well I did have a crawl under the motor at the weekend, just to look for anything 'loose' which could be the culprit but after a session of light tapping with a tool no luck.... did notice there is a little free movement between the end of the slave cylinder push rod and the clutch arm :nenau:nenau.... did sort of clatter if I wobble it.. no wear as such up/down so dont think the arm or release bearing is fudged??? It doesnt do it if the revs are a bit higher on tick over (seems to idle a little higher for a few seconds when put into neutral then the revs drop a tiny bit)... so have decided to just turn up the radio and not open windows in town so I cant hear it :thumbs:thumbs

Seems to run fine so at 130,000 miles not worth worrying about until something breaks :clap
