Any guides or pointers?

Do I need a set of "feeler keys" I think they are called?

Feeler blades :D

Bear in mind they can come in either imperial or metric, but these ones are marked up in both (saves having two sets) - http://www.screwfix.com/p/laser-af-mm-feeler-gauges-32-blade/62539

Not that I have done it on my T2, but I would think so, you have to get the engine position correct for each one to adjust.

I am prepared to be totally wrong here as I have not read up on them yet :doh

Better not mention that I was a light vehicle motor technician (posh words for a mechanic or fitter) from 1976 to 1982 :augie

Plan to do the same soon on my 2005 TD27TI.
It's pain in the neck to turn the engine because to get to pulley nut you have to remove radiator :( But I plan to take off glowplugs and it should work :)

inlet and exhaust clearances are the same? :nenau

How often should valves be done? 15k/20k?

So is there actually a set schedule this should be carried out at?

Surely we should all be doing this, though, I imagine most of us are putting our fingers in our ears and pretending they dont have valves...

Going off my service book the valves need adjusting from 50K & then checked every 12K after that:thumbs

Can anyone honestly say they've done this! :nenau

Honestly

Yes me:clap ok mine has 57K on the clock but they will be getting done very soon but my last T2 had around 50K'ish miles on the clock when I bought & I checked/adjusted them every year:thumbs it's force of habit for me as i'm onto my 7th engine with push rods but adjusted tappets almost every other day when I was a mechanic:lol

And were they out on the terrano?

No idea on this one yet but it is very quiet so should be very close & my last one was only out by a tiny bit so gave them a little tweek:D takes longer to pull off the intercooler & shift the coolant pipes out of the way than it takes to check & adjust the tappets:doh with cars I just leave it in gear & rock it to turn the engine over a bit to do the next set of valves & first time I did them on a T2 I tried it the same way & pulled my ham string:doh:lol put a socket & bar on the crank shaft was much easier

it is not noisy tappets that you should worry about, it only puts your valve timing out by a tad, no it is the quiet ones that do the damage, not enough clearance = burnt valves, not a common occurrence, but does happen, and yes both engines are the same, and never use feelers just screw down till touches valve then back off quarter turn, Rick

Never use a feeler gauge!?

These were like the bible back at Honda, why so Rick? I'm intrigued :thumb2
