I'd be careful with the old 3.0 patrol, overfuelling and thus overheating is what causes 3.0 deaths

Hi Stinka, seems to be a few 3.0 owners on the Oz site running with 2 stroke added and no issues.

I think I'll be okay - the general consensus on the "grenade issues" with the 3.0 engines, mainly on older pre 2002 models, is that it's due to a combination of overboosting + overfueling due to a dirty MAF + not enough lubrication which then causes severe overheating in pistons 3 & 4 and the resultant BANG.

I'm not worried about overboosting as I've not done any of the mods known to cause it (eg blocking the EGR). Checked my MAF within the last 3 months and it was clean as a whistle and my engine will be of the later design with increased oil channels and oil capacity so lube shouldn't be an issue...

... he says as he feverishly touches wood! :augie

2T or not 2T that is the question !

Was reading this thread on the patrol4x4 forum

I'm gonna give it a try and will report back but has anyone else tried this?

I have used 2T oil in all my petrol & older diesel cars over the last 48 years and have found it beneficial.

I use the cheapest 2T oil often from Wilkos. I add a litre or so every fourth fill up.

I find the cost of the oil is rewarded with a couple of mpg improvement and the engine is quieter and starts better.

At present I only use it in my Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 V6 petrol as my 300C is still relatively new.

The reason I have always used 2T oil is that a close friend of mine (Oil research Chemist) worked at Lubrizol Laboratories for many years testing most of the main brands of oils etc. He told me that self mixing 2T oil is some 95% similar to Redex etc and much cheaper !!

On recommendation from friends I started using 2SO in my 3L auto last July, mainly to improve lubrication to the pump, decoke the injectors, etc. & a desperate hope that it might give me more than 23mpg average (60% towing 1.6T).
There has been a small decrease in fuel consumption (easily enough to cover the extra cost) & a marked decrease in diesel knock, especially when cold. Unfortunately (due to family comitments) I've not been able to cover many miles since adding it (2K max) so next year will probably show if there are any real consumption improvements.
It can take a few 1-3000 miles (depending on vehicle history) to gain the most benefits so I'm told, mine is low miles (35K) but there was a noticeable improvement after the second fill-up.
There have been long debates about this on various LR & the 'Caravan Talk' web sites if anyone cares to research them.
I'm, basicaly, adding it under the assumption that it will do more good then harm LOL.

I've got a fair bit of 2stroke oil knocking about for chainsaws etc. I will add a splash and see what happens :thumb2

Showing my age

In the 60's I worked at weekends & School Holidays in a petrol station in Derby 4 gallons of Esso Extra Petrol cost 19s 4d that's just short of a £1 in todays dosh.

Many customers would ask for 4 shots of Redex that was squirted into the fuel tank with a large Redex dispenser that looked a bit like a big oil gun it was 1 d a shot and they would give me the change of 4d as a tip. On a busy Sunday morning I could earn more in tips than wages!

For customers with large cars like the old Vauxhall Velox they would ask for a long shot and that was a measured dose of Redex from a large upright dispenser. Happy days !!

Redex was marketed then as a UCL additative - upper cylinder lubricant and was quite popular.

2 stroke oil

All,

Good friend of mine works as a game keeper and has run a splash of 2SO in his vehicles for as long as I can remember.
He currently runs a Terrano 2.7TDi and adds a splash to every tank full.
He swears by it, I have not been brave enough to try it yet....

Ah memories!!! At 16 years of age I had a 2 stroke NSU Prima scooter, petrol was put in the tank (about a gallon as I recall), followed by an equivalent number of "squirts" from the 2T oil dispenser. This was very similar to the large Redex dispenser, but it also had a mechanical lever on the top that could be set to 20 to 1, 25 to 1, 40 to 1 etc, depending on the required strength of mix. I of course, being an impoverished teenager, always opted for 40 to 1, meaning a penny or so saved on a tankful. Happy days! :O)

i have been using 2so in my t2 and my bro does in his pj and we both see an improvement.he is unhappy that i get a better return than him.i also put a bit of acetone in as well.
i use my wvo mix he only use derv.
anyway we both recommend it.

I remember those days only too well. Redex was THE additive! I used to buy it in 1 gallon cans, that's 4.5L to the youngsters out there, (to save 1/2 the cost) & carry the required amount for one fill-up.
Must mean we are both well past our prime, macabethiel, LOL?

While I do not know a lot about Nissans (having only just bought one) I do have a bit of experience with diesel 4x4's being Landcruisers and Chev's.
This 2SO debate has been well explored on other forums I am on but my experience is that it has a bigger benefit on diesels with electronically controlled IP's.
On a 80's Landcruiser (4l N/A push rod diesel) it makes virtually no difference.
On a 90's Landcruiser (4.2 TD OHC mechanical IP) It makes very little difference.
On a 00's Landcruiser ( 4.2 TD OHC electronically controlled IP) it makes a considerable difference to smoothness noise and power.
On the Chevy Suburban( 6.5 TD electronic IP) it made the biggest difference. It was much smoother and quieter by a considerable margin and gained 2 MPG when towing 3.5t (14.5 to 16.5)
I believe it has benefits to all diesels and probably petrols too but i believe the benefits vary from one engine type to another.
