I'm new to this forum. New to any forum on the internet for that matter. Have Terranno II, 2.7TDI, 00. Can anyone tell me does it get very shuddery when braking very sharply in T2 even at low speeds. Have been told its normal working of ABS but it seems a bit abnormal. No ABS light coming on. Front and rear shoes have been done. All seems fine on inspection.

HI AND WELCOME!

How sharp are you braking? I can get mine to judder going down a gravel track, but only if a wheel locks up???? :augie Not on normal roads though!

First thing to do might be to take out the fuse for the ABS... take it for a spin and see if this makes any diff, if nothing else least then you know ifs def your ABS juddering and not something else :thumbs

I'm sure more knowledable peeps will be along soon though

Just been pondering on this (lazy day at work!)

:question

Firstly is your model a 'S' because these didnt come with ABS :augie :augie I take it that it's a SE or SVE? :lol

As said above I would take out the ABS fuse and see if this makes any difference - although ABS is controlled by sensors at the wheels and not only as a result of brake pressure.

If you take out the fuse and the problem goes I would think it may be a dodgy sensor - although I would have thought your ABS light would have been on permanently for this?

If your fuse is out and the problem is still there it could be your front disks? I know you say you have had your shoes replaced, but what about discs? Could one be warrped or damaged? Have you checked the discs for warping or run-out and if so how did you do it. Another prob is that the surface of the dics can sustain stress cracks or hard spots and usually only have a noticable effect when hot or at low speeds. You need to look closely at both sides of the disc - I think Kwik Fit do free checks - and if you buy new parts from them there covered for life? :thumbs

Also who told you this was 'normal'??? :stupid

Dan there are always arguments about what ABS feels like when it kicks in, but I can only describe it as a gravelly, low frequency vibration through the brake pedal, accompanied by a kind of creaking/grinding noise from the ABS pump (sounds a bit cretinous but all three of my T2s have made exactly the same noise)...if you are getting significantly different symptoms, e.g. through the steering wheel etc.. then it isn't ABS.

And although I say low frequency vibration, its quite a bit higher than you'd get from, say, a warped brake disc - ABS is applying the brakes 10-20 times per second whereas a problem like discs is related to wheel rpm, so such a judder would be felt only a few times a second......

Thanks for the replies all.
As far as I remember I did try disconneting the ABS and it was the same. Will try that again. It may be front discs warped etc as suggested but it does not feel like that. It feels more along the lines of a heavy gravelly shudder through the foot pedal (like mentioned by lacroupade) but I wouldn't describe it as "low frequency". Is definately worse on wet or gravelly road especially if wet. Oddly it even happened once when I got stuck in mud and was stopped (was after spinning the wheels a good bit and using brake off and on a lot without getting anywhere) and brake pedal was fairly solid but could push it down slowly with this heavy, gravelly, juddery feel at the pedal. So don't think it would be discs as movement would be required for effect of problem discs.

Does sound like ABS Daniel....in fact my wifes old truck does almost the same thing...the grinding noise sometimes carries on after you've let off the pedal and I'm thinking the ABS pump might be on its way out....?

The places its happening sound right too - although you wouldn't expect ABS to be kicking in as frequently, but again I get that same problem with the busted one.

It wants more specific diagnosis (sensor, pump etc..) as any of those bits are bloody expensive frankly.....Can't help you with that as I've let her carry on driving it til it breaks as she only uses it locally....doesn't seem to have actually stopped the ABS working.:nenau

By the way, shoot me down, but I think the ABS light only comes on when you've got a fault, as opposed to when its operating, but someone might want to correct me....preferably a 6-foot blonde bird dressed in a PVC nurses outfit.....

I'm 6 foot with tattoos and a skin head :augie

My ABS light comes on when the ABS is 'working' so's to speak.

I'd have thought with the fuse out though no power would have been going to the pump etc??? :nenau

I'll bend over then LMAO!

TBH I've always been too busy crapping my pants to check if the lights coming on! LOL....consider me shot down!:doh

My T2 does the same gravelly thing when I'm breaking, sometimes even on the road if its a bit wet.

The light on the dash does not come on though.

Dont worry... I have warm hands!!!! :naughty

Thats why come the snow / ice my fuse gets taken out straight away!!!!! :augie

Thats what I like about Terranos...no two the bloody same!:doh But it makes sense to me - wouldn't expect it to be a warning light and an activation light at the same time, butr like I always say, I was wrong once before....?

Hmmm..... look like when I'm home at the weekend I'll have to take it for a good 'raggin' just to make sure!!!! :augie :lol

Again, thanks all for the replies. To update you all I tried unplugging the ABS relay this morning on my way to work on a quiet back road. Light on dash came on and had continuous warning noise with ABS unplugged. Took the jeep to about 25/30 mph and stuck on the brakes. Didn't get the gravelly shudder from the pedal--but did get skid, wheels locking, rear end spinning. Decided that wasn't too smart so tried same procedure at about 10 mph. Still got good skid--but no gravelly shudder. So seems to be ABS and may well be normal as it is a hell of a lot safer with the ABS on and gravelly shudder than with no shudder and no ABS. And if I could offer a bit of advice after my back road experiment this morning--don't unplug your ABS or drive the T2 if ABS is not working unless you are very capable of handling skids or unless you are an utter nutter.

The light does not come on usually when it happens in my T2 either. Lacroupade may be correct that they may all be different but the ABS light on mine only comes on when there is a malfunction. It did come on and stay on at one time for about 30 miles of a 60 mile trip just after I got it back from garage after putting in new front brake shoes. Went off on its own again and have'nt seen it since--until this morning (see earlier post).

I was being polite :lol ...I think they are all the same, if someone's ABS light is on they've got a fault I'd say.

But the gravelly sensation is quite normal on most cars, its just a bit exaggerated on yours (and my wife's) because of an as-yet undiagnosed problem, but it continues to work so I plan to leave it alone LOL PAUL
