Heres one for all you winchers and would be winchers.

You're out on your own and get stuck. You only have a front mounted winch but have a large supply of tree strops, shackles and snatch blocks (pulleys). Theres no way you can make progress forward so you need to pull yourself backwards, how do you do it.

ANSWERS by PM please, lets not spoil t for everone straightaway.

Forgot to say - as many trees or ground anchors or whatever you want to attach to as you like, front an rear.

Darwin just got it right, though terminlogy a bit ropey.

Tree strop or tree protector is a wide strap/strop to go around a tree to be winched from/against etcbeing wide it won't ig in an amage the tree.

A snatch block is a type of pulley used to run the winch rope over/around to change direction of the pull or mulitply the force.

Come on folks - only 1 right answer out of a good few guesses.

Clue - use the gear and think about what using a snatch block does to pulling force and pull speed.

your not a true off roader if you use a winch:lol:lol

thats why i ain't got one and my mate has:p

think ive done it.. right now?

worked with lego any ways

:clap:clap:clap

Ok - bit difficult to express this in words but here goes.

For those not familiar a snatch block is basically a pulley.

Attach one snatch block to a tree or other anchor point in front of the vehicle.

Attach another snatch block to a tree etc behind the vehicle.

Attach a snatch block to a rear recovery point on the vehicle.

Winch rope goes,
forward to and around snatch block in front
back under vehicle to and around snatch block on tree behind
forward to and around snatch block attached to back of vehicle
back to an anchor point behind the vehicle

You can add as many more zig-zags back and forth between the vehicle as you likebut that will slow down the rate of recovery - but equally increase the force of pull.

Now the clever bit how it works.
Its actually easier to explain it backwards (you'll see what I mean).

In order to move the vehcile backwards 1 metre lets assume that we wind 1 meter of rope onto the drum. So the vehicle moves back 1m and there is 1m less rope out. In order for this to happen the arrangement at the rear needs to free up 2m of rope (1 to put on the drum and 1 to add into the distance between fairlead and the snatchblock infront). Now as the vehicle has moved back 1m it will have closed the distance between the final anchor point by 1m, so thats 1m of rope freed up, and will also have close up the distance between the 2 snatch blocks to the rear by 1m too, so thats a second metre freed up.

You can of course add 2 or more snatch blocks out to the side and route the rope round the side rather than under the vehicle, but for basic explanation they would just confuse matters.

A winching challange

thanks simon.
i worked it out so far but couldnt makeout how to get the pully system working didnt think it would work down side of truck .
NEVER THOUGHT OF RUNNING ROPE UNDER TRUCK :doh
GOOD ONE WELL DONE GOT ANY MORE.:thumb2

don't shout at me if i am wrong, but would it not be more easy just to attach a snatch block to the anchor point in front of the vehicle, run the winch line in the snatch block and back the vehicle?

Not sure what you mean, but the object is to winch backwards with a front mounted winch.

aahhh right now i am catching onto what you mean, missed the backwards bit:splif

um..

if your stuck, how you get the cable under it, after all, if you dig it so you can, why not just dig the whole thing out?

im lost..

you can go under or around it zipps... look up winching on you tube , you will be amazed

my guess was have a loop from winch to back BUT the front pully was on the car, as as it pulled the cabel it the whole lot went back..

works with lego :)
