chaps. got a weird one.

I have a noise coming from the back of the car. Sounds exactly like the rear wheel bracket. If I remove the wheel, noise persists. The bracket is rock solid, and i have tried to wiggle the door, but thats rock solid. i removed the jack, still got the noise.

:nenau

what else can possibly make a sound, that sounds internal, and like a wobbley door bracket???

Maybe get someone to ride in the back to try and pin point the source?

Does it only happen at speed or slowly too? just on bumps? How about rocking the car from outside to see if there is anything odd happening underneath (not been running down living things, that are stuck under there, have you?)

Better still .you get in the back cos you know what to listen for. let someone else drive. David.

I had a noise until I adjusted the door catch so the door was closer in.

I had a similar noise, drove me mad for months! Eventually turned out to be two broken welds inside the door, apparently it's a common problem.
To check, remove the rear door card and immediately below the rear wiper motor you will see an inner bracket (this carries the ferrules into which the spare wheel bracket bolts). On mine the two broken welds were towards the bottom of the door, and were meant to be holding this bracket to the inner skin (the bit you see when the door card is removed).
If you grab hold of this bracket towards the bottom and push it backwards and forwards you will see where the broken welds are (if that is the problem).
I drilled mine out and fitted two M6 nuts and bolts. All of this is behind the door card and inside the door, so the repair is not visible once the door card is replaced - good luck!

thanks chaps, im about 94.2% sure its NOT the spare wheel bracket-I already checked it and re drilled my already broken welds, although that is the sound it is making. Rocking it myself does not replicate the sound, neither does bouncing the car up and down!

its weird...its almost like its the wheel bracket, but i have removed the wheel and the noise persists. The door appears to fit solid, but as Fez suggests im going to check the door latch in case its slightly out perhaps, thats the only other thing i can think of.....!!

The rear door has a latch to keep it fully open, we had to drive 10 miles once with a huge roll of carpet in the back, but to save strain on the hinges, I removed the spare wheel.

So take it for a spin with the rear door open, without the wheel attached.

Check your seats, they can wobble in/on their brackets, as has said, try and travel in the back as it's being driven and you may have a better chance of locating your annoying niggle ;)

cheers chaps, ill give all your ideas a bash on Saturday to try and find the culprit!

I ordered a new rear exhaust rubber as when checking i noticed mine was badly worn already (but its not that making the nose i dont think...)

Have a look at the jack behind the panel in the O/S/ R, it's held in with a rubber band thing and it may have broken

rarrgghh,....its still doing it!! like, if i go over a big bump, or go round the rough track behind the house, and the car jolts, then it does it. it does sound like the door or the spare wheel, but i already tried putting the spare in the boot and its the same. might try it with the door open as Rustic suggests, is it possible, that the catch for the door has moved? would this allow the door to physically jump when its lock? im not so sure, but thats what it sounds like!

or, is it possible, that even with the spare wheel off, the bracket itself can still make that noise?? hmm....i need to remove the bracket too....

ok, ill try that, cheers guys!

i dont think so. if i open the rear door, and lift the car up and down, its all ok....

Hi Clive, I'm happy to help locate if you need someone to drive or sit in back seats for you. I'm on leave at the mo too if that helps.

Jim

PS you worry too much:thumbs

yes i have filled in the "Micky Mouse was ere" mess you left me.....

ok, quick update. Today, went to the recycle centre, so plenty of areas where the clunk clonk was happening. With the seats down, couldnt really pin point the location. So, I remove the back wheel and bracket, went for a drive over the rough track round the back, both with door closed, and door open and locked in place. with door closed, yes the clunk is there. With door open, although im driving much more carefully, the clunk and associated noises, albeit quieter, are still there....

top hinge going into door (on car body, its rock solid for sure..

could it be where the hinges fix inside the door??

hi guys, furthur investigation has got me, maybe, a bit closer to finding the culprit of my rear door noise.

I was repairing a bolt I snapped earlier using my extraction tool, so took the car for a drive to see if that cured the noise, it hadnt, but i got the distint impression it is still the hinges.

I had a study, and it looks like the tac welds are coming loose on the hinge bracket that goes behind the hinge and fixes to the door at th back and front, its at the front (the bit you can see) that i think is coming loose:

this is exactly what happened to the wheel bracket-which i bolted through. Now, can I do the same with this, drill out the weld and shove a sturdy bolt or two through?
