hi, new to the forum just got back into terrano's the last one i used to have was always bending steering idlers, ive heard you can either strengthen them or fit a second power steering box to the passenger side, just wondering how this is done if anyone knows as i am making a buggy and it will be running dumper tyres. any pics or information would be great thanks.
cheers kieron :)

Cut the box up, its obvious when u get one

Chop the gear off the shaft inside so it turns freely

Pack with grease, rivet a plate over the hole left with sealer

Here's mine :

Its ugly as sin, but solid and fully sealed

thanks noticed in your pics u have uprated track arms did u make these

For the attention of Makitfit or Stinka etc, while off road on Sunday came up a particularly hard climb had three attempts but could not over come grounding out at the top, so decided was not going down again but use winch to get the front wheels back in the ground, but upon walking around the front found the front wheels were extreme toe in and looking at the idler the ball joint nut was above the chassis, when it normally passes under, so though something was rather bent and was looking forward to a slow drive back to the car park, however once on its wheels again all was normal, what,s going on? Rick

Sounds like its uber fooked and bending, then unbending depending on forces as they come, plus the weakened arm now lost its strength

I did 2 in 3 months, and I had to keep bending them back straight until I did the mod, a pot hole would bend mine badly

Very easy mod tho rick

For the idler ball joint to be above chassis it must be bent in half and in that case must have taken the drag link with it.
The idlers as std are only good for stirring your tea. They WILL bend with any proper offroading or tyre size increase. 31s and up = danger zone IMHO
Another thing that could have made it look worse is the compression rod bushes. Check them Rick and then the top arm bushes. They'll all be under greater load now with the lokka and Slindon fun :thumb2

Thank you both for your replies, I just cannot understand it, bellied on that summit with the front wheels in the air, the nut was deff above the bottom of the chassis, but with the wheels on the ground all was good again, I cannot see the idler bending back and forth so something else was going on, will try and find time tomorrow to jack it up and try and replicate the issue, need to sort it if damaged as want to try Picaddily Wood next Sunday, Rick

The idler bushes can be goosed and allow quite a lot of movement in the arm before it actually bends.
Comp rod bushes then I reckon
That'll allow for massive castor cock up allowing the whole hub to rock forward or back

yes reckon it has to be the idler bushes, the idler is bolted solid to the chassis the only way the arm could have lifted is if the bushes are goosed, no worry I have two spares plus a steering box if I need it, I really must try and wear my glasses more. Rick
