Well, it hurts a lot to say this but my Patrol is no longer.

This morning we got rudely woken up by a popping sound. Turns out that our garage was on fire with flames shooting out of the roof. My Patrol and every tool I own has gone up in flames.

The biggest loss is all our Christmas decoration. Everything my other half collected over the last 50 years on her travels around the world. Memorabilia that she will never get back.

I feel for you Colin, but life goes on mate, you and your Mrs will recover, just be thankful it did not spread to your house, stuff can be replaced and nothing can take away your treasured memories, Rick

Not been feeling the love to visit the forum over the last few days. Currently in Portugal enjoying some sunshine but the garage gets talked about a lot.

Fortunately, nobody was injured which is the most important. The Incident Commander said to one of our neighbours that we were lucky there was hardly any wind. Otherwise we would have also lost the house.

An inspector for the contractor has paid us a visit and is recommending demolition and rebuilt of the garage. Not really surprised as the arches over the garage doors are cracked and sagging. Every wall has a massive crack running through it from top to bottom.

A building surveyor is coming round to inspect it on Wednesday and he will also advise if any remedial work has to be done to make the building safe. Heras fencing will also go up on Wednesday.

The representative of the contractor said that it will take 6-8 months until the new garage is completed. It is only a single skin with pillars which doesn’t take long to build at all. We haven’t been given a confirmed timeframe yet but if it takes 6-8 months then I don’t expect them to start this year.

I have very quickly looked at a possible replacement for the Patrol. There is a very nice near identical Patrol on Autotrader with 35k on the clock. Just a shame that the asking price is £20k!! Which I will never pay for a 26 year old car that is worth £200 according to the insurance.

A pickup will suit me but thy won’t be allowed into the council tip and the insurance is sky high. Land cruisers all have very high milage so it might become a Land Rover Discovery 3 from around 2006-2009. Not ideal but at least parts are easy to get and not too expensive. However, this will probably be something for next year.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday, did you lose all the new parts you purchased? if not then I am sure you can market those, re Patrols yes they are indeed fetching good money, I keep getting asked if I want to sell mine, but never will even when I can no longer drive, the winch capability is far too valuable to lose for tree work here, Rick

Unfortunately Rick, all the parts went up in flames. Hopefully I dan get the insurance to pay out for them but not holding my breath. The DMF looks in reasonable shape but I don’t want to sell anything on as I don’t know how it has been affected by the fire.

There is a nice looking Patrol on the net. Comes with a clean MOT but checking the previous MOT’s it had many advisories and fails. Happy to buy a Patrol and do some work to it. If I could find a high milage 2.8td I might just transplant my own engine as that seems to have survived the worst. Needs a few new belts and the wiring loom is burned on first look it seems reasonable.

I was hoping to remove the car from the garage in the next week. That would give me a better chance to have a look at it. The interior is completely gone but I am hoping to save the axles. Potentially for a new project once all is done and dusted. We will see.

Well the axles fetch good money, as can most other parts, very sad episode is all I can say but make the most of it, Rick

Yes, very sad indeed.

We are waiting for the structural engineer on Wednesday and then hopefully extract the car.

As we had some rain yesterday I spend some time looking for a replacement. I think that it will still be a Nissan but this time a Pathfinder. Good on towing, room for the dogs and a bit shorter than a pickup.

A few cheap ones going on the internet but the MOT advisories are mostly about corrosion. Not going down that road again. Would like something that is half decent and make it better. Not buying another basket case.

Got a call from the insurance today to say that I can extract the car. See if anything is salvageable.

Only just caught up with this Colin.

What a real shame to lose so many possessions but it could have been so much worse I guess.

Do you have any idea what caused the fire?

Will be interesting to see what you can salvage, pics would be good, Rick

No idea at all Bat.

The day before I had been at work the whole day so hadn’t worked on the car. The garage went up in flames in the early our of the morning. By the time we were aware that something was up, the roof had already collapsed. Luckily the house was spared, that’s all I can say.

Just had some “good” news from our council. As we live in the Greenbelt they need a full planning application for the new garage. So it doesn’t look that much will happen before the end of the year.

Lots of photos will be taken Rick.

The insurers appoint a company that sifts through the rubble and lists anything recognisable. Unfortunately, I have difficulty trusting people so I will try to get as many photos as I can.

Very odd happenings there.

Surely if the new garage isn't any different to the old one you can tell them to poke their planning fcukwittery.

The overwhelming majority of people have seemed to have had some kind of lobotomy in recent years, so I totally get where you are coming from.

If you are not "Listed" then you can tell the council twats were to go, simply quote you are replacing an existing building, to obtain that just do not demolish ALL of the existing before you start the replacement, if you demolish all then yes it will become a new build, look at one of my new jobs to keep me busy threads re the shed in a field, Rick

We are not “listed” but are in the “greenbelt”. As the garage is forward of the principal elevation of the property it is not covered under permitted development. Hence, the council requires a full planning application.

Under the greenbelt rules any new structure in the greenbelt is deemed inappropriate unless it falls in certain categories. We went through all this with the agricultural building in our field. That issue started in 2017 and only just has come to conclusion.

A replacement building, as long as it is not materially larger, falls under the exemption categories. So the planning application should only be a technicality.
Not risking demolition and then the council turning up. As we will not get a replacement building when the old one is gone.

Anybody got any ideas about Nissan Pathfinder? Seen a 2013 with a good MOT history and £105 on the clock. Not as big as a Navara but still has a 3000kg towing limit. Looking for a manual as I don’t want an automatic.
