After getting soundly ripped off last year when I MOT'd my Honda Jazz (poor handbrake sir? That's worn discs - only £122 with pads). The car had only done 50,000 miles and there wasn't a trace of a lip on the discs.
(Headlamps both set too low? we'll reset them for only £22.50 sir!)
I've had the car 5 years and the only time the headlights have been touched was when I fitted Nightbreakers 3 years (and 3 MOT's) ago.
Rusty brake pipes and ferrules (only an advisory).

So, this year I was buggered if I was going to be seen off again and by pure chance I discovered that my local South Glos County Council MOT their own vehicles, but also do them for Joe Public - I thought, they won't be telling me porkies about worn and out of adjustment bits, so I gave them a try - as I said, a breath of fresh air!

Nice waiting room with tv and vending machine and a window to watch the goings on. Half an hour later I've got my pass ticket, with a u/s number plate bulb replaced, the handbrake cable tightened from 10 notches to 4 and the n/s headlight adjusted - no advisories, no mention of rusty brake pipes and NO extra charge!

Guess where I'll be going next year.

Wow, that is good... I wonder if ours do it as well... actually, I must admit I like my local garage, the guy is a 4x4 fanatic, and always enthuses over my truck.

The garage that saw me coming last year I've used for years and I should have heard alarm bells when the I noticed the(tasty) receptionist had been replaced by Godzilla and I recognised none of the mechanics - yup, the garage had changed hands - they've taken their last pound off me!

That's great news:thumbs i'm lucky as it's my old boss who MOT's my motors & he won't try & rip me off infact I often tell him the bits I think it'll fail on like the O/S/R brake pipe he came back & said it'll be fine until next year it's not to bad yet:D

Just had a Google and there's one in Bristol too, they don't do repairs so their not going to be just try to rob you.:thumb2

Absolutely, that was my main reason for giving them a try. The Bristol depot is in Sandy Park Road in Brislington and the one I went to, run by South Glos Council, is in Broad Lane, Yate, behind The Fox pub.

An interesting thread, it highlights the real problem inherent with the UK system......a vested interest in the post MOT repair.
Here in France we have state run `Control Technique` stations, that do not undertake any repairs, so remain impartial.

Likewise in Spain!
