20 mpg towing sounds thirsty to me i tow with fourtrak and car transporter get just under 30 mpg but i only go 50mph at the very maximum even on the motorway

It is thirsty, I guess, but I only tow two or three times a year. I also give a bit of welly as well, and am not adverse to plus legal towing speeds occasionally.

Other than slowing down, what else can I do to get more out of it?

Regards

Alan

What fuel are you using.I used to use diesel from work or tesco on that it used to do 25mpg and smoke quite a bit.I only use esso or shell diesel now no smoke and up to 32mpg roughly half towing half solo

Yes, I use Tesco diesel mostly because it is a few pence cheaper.

I'll try a tankful of some better vintage next time to see how the car runs, but I don't think I will tinker with it, as it starts and runs fine at the moment. That'll jinx it for sure :)

Thanks

I think a caravan's wind resistance is probably the main issue, a car transporter probably causes lot less drag. Unless you have a transit van reversed onto it :lol

Good point. My caravan is quite slab fronted, and I don't think that a Terrano has the best drag coefficient anyway. Stick a Halfords roof box on it, run the air con all the way home, and you have the recipe to make an Arab sheik happy!

Mine

Brimed is the most acurate way assuming trip meter is almost acurate

1st brim long distance, 65-75 mph av = 32+ mpg
2nd brim, 90+ mph = 27 (obviously not me driving :augie )
Me towing an empty car transporter circa 550kg one way and return with 1850kg, av 27. Easy on the throttle.

Mine is well maintained, ie, proper filter and oil changes, check you havant got flat tyres! Always do the fuel filter too, this can affect mpg and how the car drives.

well , ive just done this test over the last week , i did it twice to get a average , bear in mind i dont have a t2 ,

filled tank to brim .......

travelled 63 miles , then refilled ....

amount of diesel used .....12.27 litres = 23.3 mpg

travelled 118 miles then refilled ,

amount of diesel used ....20.45 litres = 26 mpg .

my sums might be wrong but thats not bad for a 3.1 :nenau

My Trol will get 19/20 mpg town driving solo, and has managed 25/6 mpg towing a 26ft twin axle tintent on holiday but has also only managed 17mpg towing the tintent but the difference being i was travelling very hilly roads so where you are travelling can make a huge difference to fuel consumption.
