when is a 4x4 not a 4x4,when it went for its mot and i was told there is no front prop so only rear drive.
news to me as this is the first mot i have put on it and had it 11 months.
so questions need answers please.
its a 3l auto.
will 2.7 manuel prop fit or does it have to be 3l.
so i need a prop and the bolts.
why was it removed?is the front box ok?i take it is an easy fix for someone on ramp?
who has a good prop with good uj and bolts and how much please.

This is ringing all kinds of alarm bells to me now!!!! You mean to tell me you didn't have a look underneath it or get someone to before you parted with any cash?

Front prop could have been faulty itself, UJ's or the sliding joint etc. It could also be because of even more sinister scenarios though too.

Transfer box could be whining or non functional, they may have blown a CV and rather than messing around with fiddly rubbish up front decided that it would just be easier to unbolt the prop?

More to the point, before you even try to engage 4x4 I'd make sure you've got fluid in the transfer box and front diff, who knows the history :nenau

Hi mate,

A long shot. but have you checked the MOT history. I just might give a clue if the tester noticed something in the past.

No front drive shock!

As already posted several possible reasons could have been done to improve economy who knows.

Is it worth contacting the previous owner ? I had an issue with a previous car where the key for the fold away tow bar was missing. He was most helpful as it turned out and told me where a spare key was secreted for it!

I reckon it was a faulty propshaft, I’ve heard of more faulty propshafts than transferboxes or front diffs. It’ll be fixed hubs so I reckon cv’s will be fine

Not too sure about compatibility but I can tell you an old style 2.7 shaft with grease nipples was a straight swap out for my old 05 plate 2.7

I reckon it’ll be same but better to check.

Won't make a bit of difference mate, if the CV is snapped and was making a noise as it was always spinning due to being fixed hubs, prop off would be the quickest way to stop the noise!!!

Maybe the prop had taken a wallop (grounded) and had knocked it out of kilter giving the vehicle a wobble. Removed and just not replaced maybe.:nenau
hopefully nothing sinister.:thumb2

Got to start with replacing the prop I removed mine & drove it for a short time while waiting for new ujs so may be previous owner did the same. easy enough to fit I don't even bother putting my truck on the ramp to remove or fit front propshaft.

I'm going with that!! Hopefully there's no real sinister reason behind it.

Do you want to get me a picture of the front prop on my 3 litre manual?

some one wanted a low box for towing but didnt want it in 4x4?
some one i know did it with a 4x4 (cant remember what make/model) once for shuntind trailers around a yard
