Hi, techi question, have a friend who has a later Terrano than mine.
He's got an 05 but he's not getting four wheel drive when he selects?
He's had it into a few local garages, not Nissan nor 4x4 specialist's and he's getting mixed diagnosis. (transfer box being the worst)
He'd like some opinion before he starts spending.

Cheers

Is the front prop turning ? If yes it's the diff if no its the transfer box

hi had trouble with my mav was told transfer box. when i looked in to it was the front hubs got set from breakers yard got 4 wheel drive now:thumb2 darryl

Well, if front drive shafts are turning as well, but front wheels are not then front hubs are goosed as above

they could fail but they don't have freewheeling hubs anyway?

put it in 4wd then try and turn front prop, if it dont turn the hubs are probly sticking, take them apart give them a clean and a good grease with copper slip

stupid question , but is the green 4wd light coming on ? :nenau

an 05 will have front fixed hubs, so one less thing to check.

jack up rear, put in 4wd, carefully let in drive should feel front
end trying to pull back end of jack/stands being used.

suggest just have rear tyre just off ground so can spin freely
with drive and if moves not far to 'fall'.

It's possible that it has free wheeling hubs, some motors do stick around in storage for a long time.

Look at the size and shape of the front hub's in this link and see if it matches your friends. If your friends is smaller then tell him to come on hear and pay his tenner and get stacks of step by step advice :thumbs http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/downloads/workshop/wk15.pdf

The later fixed hubs are a lot smaller and remember the hub is below the silver centre trim.

What is the history, has it worked before, if so when was the last time it was used, I hope not on a normal road, :doh:doh. where you have good grip, or is the vehicle a recent purchase? :nenau

The green light coming on, as Briggie asked means that the select mechanism in the transfer box is engaging correctly, so the front prop shaft should now only be able to rotate 1/4 turn max in any direction.
If it rotates and keeps rotating then probably the transfer box is wrecked.
But this is normally quite rare, so there are spare boxes around.:thumbs
