Hi all, just thought i would start a thread regarding what 4x4 volunteer services any of the members are part of and any experiences they may wish to share?

I recently joined West Yorkshire 4x4 Volunteers (http://www.wy4x4vol.org)
They are a charity organisation based in Bradford, West Yorkshire and is run by a great bunch of guys and gals.
They have a monthly meeting to update everyone on any up coming events etc and the performance of the club.
Membership is £12 per year and this gives you full responder status, which means that when there are any "shouts" due to bad weather etc you could be called up as a volunteer to assist with duties such as helping to transport vital medical staff, emergency doctors etc too and from their destination.

So the recent bad snow the group has contracts with medical services to make sure that the staff arrive as they should ensuring patient care etc.

They also arrange camping and green laning trips, off road training days as well as fund raising events.

If nothing else it is nice to try and give a little back to the community without lining someone's pocket.

We do also get paid mileage allowance if you are involved in any "shouts"

I know this sounds like i am trying to sell it as a service but thats not the aim of this post.
The aim of the post is to raise a little bit of awareness and possible support

Thanks for taking the time to read this

so you pay to volunteer your time and services thats a new one on mei have done a lot of volunteering giving my time for free i never had to pay to do it

Could be for some kind of insurance?

If it's a new group they may need some funds to startup for the first year or two perhaps?

There's also a group called Yorkshire and Humberside 4x4 Response if memory serves right.

nope not for insurance you would need to inform your normal car insurance company of what you were doing some allow it others dont

They probably have third party cover for other stuff (not the driving) Like with raynet.

£12 a year for a rewarding hobby sounds like a bargain to me :thumb2

I am too far away to join in though :nenau

I pay more than that for my hobby...:doh

I never thought about that....the £12.00 per year is to cover the cost of the high viz vest and ID card.

I'm a member of Sussex 4x4 Response. Do a little good while having fun and get cheap proper training in off road and adverse road condition skills, emergency recovery, radio, CB etc to boot.
We could be working with the police soon as well, helping where we can. Which will use the charity a little more often than Sussex's rare bouts of inclement weather :D
