Hi there,
I have Terrano 2, model 2000 with problem engaging 4x4
I have checked the front locks on the hubs, they are OK,

Can anyone help with suggestion?

I had this problem when I first brought my 2004 Terrano
There is a guide plate on the transfer box and a joint that seizes up, mine just needed a mate underneath with some encouraging with a bar and a hammer whilst I forced the lever in the truck. Once it engaged once, it was fine after that and still works perfectly to this day, it's just a little seized, probably a good thing as you know the previous owner didn't use 4WD often which means it less likely to have been abused.
Have a look at this thread I started when I had the issue, shout out to Ray for the pics :thumb2
When I first bought my 05 plate terrano I only found out when I got home that the 4X4 didn't want to play cricket :doh
It just wouldn't go into 4WD Low box.
I became suspicious when I realised there was a lot of gearbox and road noise only to find someone had removed the gaiter around the gear stick and put the surrounding metal gasket underneath the rubber boot and not on top so there was nothing sealing it down so all the nasty noise was getting in.
When I removed the gaiter, I tried to work out how the 2WD/4WD selector stick worked and for the life of me I was stumped as the channelled plate which is bolted to the gear box which guides the stick to the correct positions was not allowing the stick to move into the last position.
I took the plate off and hey presto - I could select 4WD low box!!!:clap put the plate back on and back to square one.
I then followed the track in the plate and then realised it can be turned around!!!! SOME PRAT HAD PUT IT BACK IN THE WRONG WAY ROUND!!!!
