hi guys, im little baffled with my terrano as once a mth i use the 4wd just for a mile or 2 helps stop any seizing electrics or mechanics , i had mitsubishi & toyota in the past both 4wd i used to reverse of my drive then off no probs but if i try the same manouvre in my terrano in 4wd if feels like the diff has wound up it stops ! this is about 10ft , id baffled as to why the mitsi & toyota never gave this prob & my terrano does.. also im concered if the terrano is developing some mechanical fault.... i know you should never drive for long distance on a dry road in 4wd as i always use 2wd its but only the 10ft scares me is this normal

Shouldn't use on dry tarmac in 4 wheel drive, it needs some way of slipping at the wheels. Or maybe its your rear diff telling you to change the oil. David.

Do not drive it on tarmac in 4wd!

There is no centre diff, Your other vehicles probably did with the option of locking it. So 4wd in them was ok on tarmac when centre diff is not locked.

I wouldn't be too worried, Maybe drive it every 3-4 months in 4wd on grass/mud or gravel. Once a month is not really necessary in my opinion.

The other vehicles you had prob didnt have rear lsd that is what causes the wind up you dont get same problems with open diff.No need to use it once a month wont make any difference you only need to do that on cars with solid front axles to keep the bearings lubricated the terrano has driveshafts

Def a no no as others have said, best way if you have auto hubs, is to engage 4 wheel drive, pref on wet grass or mud, loose gravel, etc drive forward afew yards to ensure that the hubs are engaged then whilst still moving forward slip the lever back to 2wd then drive a few miles or so like this.

Note if you reverse at any point during this exercise you will disengage the hubs, if at any point you get a clicking noise, then the hubs aren't fully engaged/disengaged. So repeat..

This way you exercise the hubs, front diff and gears in the transfer box without the wind up.

I do this every few months.
Not done mine any harm, I've had mine nearly 17 years and apart from auto hub greasing when I replaced the front discs, I have done nothing else.
PS they still work too...

Best regards,
Rustic

some good info ive learned , thank god its not developing a fault i was thinking big bill:doh firstly i will change the diff oil & always make sure its on grass gravel or snow before usuing 4wd ....great advice thanks guys:thumbs

Mine does a very short distance on tarmac in 4wd most days and yes it does seem to fight the steering and feel odd, so nothing to worry about.

superb post there by rustic, just what i was going to type as scrolled down the
thread!

sure its not lsd after all it would do that in 2wd too.

Yes having the same truck for nearly 17 years, I know what it has done so I learn't the hard way, then I found this club.:thumb2:thumb2
I'm keeping quiet, my fees are due next month....
Will I join again ? Sure right I will.....:thumb2

With reference to the rear LSD, I always match the rear tyres, same tread, same type, same pressures etc, then the LSD is not working overtime when you are driving in a straight line.... Which is most of the time. :thumb2

COME ON THE SNOW... I'm waiting to overtake all those cars trying to get up our hill........

YES OK..... I do go out in the snow, just to err..... post a letter.... or any excuse to go out and play......

snow due tomorrow?

typical truck is in for mot and full service, ouch, and theres
a 260 quid purple beer mat ready for the window despite it
doing nothing for the performance of the truck.
