Hi guys. Am I correct in thinking that 4 wheel drive is not available while reversing? as the auto hubs will dissengage?

Hi Ezelife
I think you'll find that 4WD is effective in both forward and reverse with auto hubs as they disengage forward lock and re-engage when the front axle shafts rotate in the opposite direction. I'm not absolutely sure about that but my experience of driving my T2 in 4WD both forward then reverse, when on loose or slippery surfaces, is that it appears to engage in both directions.

CaptLimey is quite correct, the auto hubs engage in both directions, as the hubs are the same part number and it doesn't matter when you get a replacement they will fit either wheel, left or right.

As said before, as long as you have 4 wheel drive selected, either 4 High, or 4 low.

Oh blast....thanks for the reply's good people. Looks like the hubs need stripping and cleaning then. Poo.

yes it is correct that they work both ways, but please remember they disengage as you change direction and almost straight away re engage, so easy on the throttle too heavy and I can see damage being done, you all know the scenario rocking back and for to get out, Rick

Well I cleaned the auto hubs .... all bits seem to be there. 4 wheel drive still not working :(
When gearbox in park and drive lever in 4H the forward prop shaft can not be turned as I would expect (but I am brand new to 4x4 this is my first) when I turn the front drive shafts they both "go a bit stiff" after about half a turn - if I have read right that is the brake rings. But nothing "clunks in" if I turn the offside drive shaft this then turns the front prop (when in 2H) but when I turn the nearside drive shaft it does not turn the front prop. When I turn the front prop it does turn said nearside drive shaft for around half a turn - then drive shaft stops and prop carries on turning (2H)
I hope I am not to confusing with my discription but I am new :bow
The light on the dash comes on when in 4H and 4L and the 4L does go to low but as for the 4 wheel drive it just does not seem to work. The back wheels spin a bit on my hilled gravel drive when reversing off it in 2H or 4H :nenau

from your description sounds like the front diff is gone, if you jack up one front wheel and turn the front prop shaft (levers in the UJ if needed) once the hubs lock the raised wheel should turn if not and the drive shafts do not turn either then diff gone, if the shaft to the wheel on the ground turns then that hub has not locked, Rick

Thanks for that Rick. I will try that tomorrow. I take it if it is the diff then that is very bad news

Take off the auto hubs , jack up rear wheels off floor then run it in 4 wheel drive back wheels will turn now check if the front drivesahts are turning if they dont then see if the front prop is turning from that its easy to see the problem very much doupt the front diff is broke but if it is a replacement can be had very cheap got some here

Never mind all this jacking up and turning propshafts nonsense; theres a far easier way.

Find yourself a stretch of nice dry tarmac, stick it in 4WD and try doing a tight 3-point turn, or do a reversing manouevre on FULL LOCK.....if your 4WD is working you will get transmission windup very quickly and its quite unmistakeable...you'll feel the wheels trying to skip as the tyres attempt to scrub out the tension thats induced.

Repeat back in 2WD and notice how much easier it is.

Don't worry, you won't do any damage.

But if its exactly the same in 2wd and 4wd then somethings bolloxed.:thumb2

or just find yourself some mud, rev the engine until your rear wheels are slipping then engage 4wd and drive away - or not :doh

But his isnt working and he needed to find out why

Agreed it will tell him if it is working or not but it will not tell him WHAT is not working, Rick

ah not quite - he only thinks its not working and admits he's new to 4WD, so diagnosis has to start from the beginning. :) although obviously we've moved on from that now with all the propshaft twiddling.....

Oh go on be the dif, go on:eek:
If you need a diff I've got one here all wrapped up ready to go :naughty

Well I had the back wheels jacked up, took off the front hubs and put in 4H and D and the back wheels and front drive shafts are all spinning:lol
I presume it is the auto hubs then....it looks ok to me, from the pics I have seen all bits seem to be there and greased yesterday (though they was full of grease already - normal grease though) so I do not know what to do. I am normally pretty good at working out how things work but for the life of me I can not work out how the outer square gogs engage in the end of the hub case? I can lever them out a bit with the driver then it springs back in ....but how does the spinning shafts force them out to engage? beats me.
