I am new at 4x4, I live in rural France and need to use 4x4 regularly.
When I put my Nissan patrol in 4wd, it drives along fine for a while then gives a loud thump with a slight jerk. The 4wd light stays on. It will do this irregularly as long as I am in 4wd. A friend says that it is jumping in and out of 4wd.
Is this so, and if it is, how can this be fixed.

not sure about the patrol. but to me it sounds more like "wind up"

do a search on here, see if this is what your getting.

some one else who knows the Troll better will pop anlong soon im sure

when do you use the 4wd? - roads or only on grass/gravel/mud etc

I use it mostly on rough tracks andin the ice and snow, although it mostly happens on wet tarmac roads it was also happening on snow

David, if the Y61 Patrol is the same as the Y60 then there is no center diff.

If you use 4wd on roads where the traction is fairly good then you will experience what you are describing.

What is basically happening when you go round bends etc, the front wheels are traveling a slightly different path to the rear. It is this difference in the distance traveled that is causing wind up between the front and rear prop shaft. The noise and jerk you can hear is the props/wheels/tires protesting and trying to compensate for the wind up :thumb2

Thanks you all for your comments, I am relieved its not going to cost me anything but a little more caution

Well you have payed... your £10...

and just look at the service you recived.

Whereabouts are you David? Capt Limey is in France and I have a place in Gascony near Tarbes/Lannemezan.

Hi ya David

I also drive a Y61 patrol, yes that sounds like drive wind up
just use the 4wd when your on the loose stuff that way you
will avoid and unnecessary expense to the drive system :thumb2
