4.2 Problems

Hi all,

I am having a couple of issues with the patrol,

I can select drive and the truck will drive just fine, but if I try to shift to 1 or 2 on the box, it wont let me, is there a reason for this?

Also I am getting a lot of smoke at 2000 rpm, less when the engine is warmer, its a blue/light grey colour and it feels like its misfiring. Is this the turbo on its way out?

Patrol problems

I do not know much about your smoke output but I do know a little about automatic boxes.

Can you be a bit more specific about what you mean. From rest if you put the gear lever from D into position 1 or 2 is it physically not able to move from D even with the detent button if you have one depressed or is the gearbox behaving as if its in D and ignoring the gear lever position?

No, the lever will simply not slot into the 1 & 2 position, its sits in D ok, but if I try and move it to 1 & 2 it wont go. Even if the engine is off I can move the lever but not in to 1 & 2 position.

Same in the H4 L4 and H2 no matter what I do it wont move in to the 1 & 2 slots

Auto Gear Lever

If its similar to my r3mR the gearshift is a mechanical link from the gearbox to the lever in the car.I would start by removing the top cover and making sure nothing has fallen into the gate mechanism. Then check the entry point into the gearbox for possible loose linkage.
If the vehicle drives ok in drive then its unlikely to be an internal problem.
If your shift lever has a detent button it could be the link on that.Mine was a rod and plastic lever and the lever was worn it ran down the hollow gear Lever. Hope this helps.

Thanks I will check all that out, the underside of the car is completely caked in mud, so that wont help i am sure. But its coming home this weekend so I will have a look then.
