So I'm running on rapeseed about 33% ish :lol. :nenau

I have another 20l drum waiting for me. Question is, for the guys running on rapeseed right now! With weather being cold, down to minus 2 or minus 3 how much of a mix dare you use?

When summer is here im sure its great running a very high mix, just wanted to know what guys are using now?

Lastly there seems to be half the people running straight veg/rapeseed on here saying you dont need to change fuel filter and half saying you do? :nenau :nenau :nenau

I have bought a filter anyway but was just curious why there was debate? Perhaps some peoples fuel tanks were clean (thus not pulling all the crap up)

Thanks :thumb2

Straight in the summer

40L of rape and 10L UNLEADED PETROL when cold

I run my tank from full to near empty, so in the warm weather, I put 40l diesel, and 30 litres of veg oil, sometimes having to run it for a day or two to get the full 30l in, if it was not as empty as I thought, but currently, being a whimp, I am putting 50l diesel in, and just 20l veg oil. I am erring on the safe side, as I only have 3 glow plugs, which makes her harder to start on cold mornings anyway.

When I first got the car, I managed to fill it with unleaded, so had to have the tank drained, which I guess, got rid of any crud before I ever used veg oil. I just change my fuel filter at each service, with a cheap blueprint (or what ever it is called) one from local motor factor.

oh right, i was on the halfway mark on the gauge and then added 20 litres of rapeseed, so that prob works out 40 litres deisel and 20 litres veg? or there abouts? and shes running great so far (3rd day in) :thumbs

Well I'm a risky risky bastid and I'm only adding 5l of Diesel per 20l of Veg :lol
I've got a new found confidence in the truck though since fitting new plugs so I'm not too scared :thumb2

If it ever gets a bit dicey and I think the battery will give up soon, into the engine bay I got with a can of Easy Start to the air box :thumb2

Have you noticed it's started to smell different yet? If it still smells like Diesel you haven't reached the Veg yet

Veg oil is thicker than diesel, no matter how much diesel you mix it with, you will still end up with thicker fuel. Generally these old girls don't care and the IP is fairly strong compared to other vehicles.

Mixing with up to 20% (best not to go much more than this) petrol with veg will bring it down to diesel viscosity as petrol is much, much thinner. (It's also cheaper!).

Oil has a higher cetane level than diesel so should give a bit more power, but for various reasons that others could detail, you'll probably not notice this, however, petrol has a lower cetane rating and mixing in petrol will bring the overall cetane level below that of regular diesel. A small drop of cetane enhancer like veggieboost will bring that back, but I ran out ages ago and don't really see much difference.

Mine seems happiest with 10-20% petrol during cold months with a splash of diesel every now and then as that assists cold starts. Having said that I have shiny brand new glowplugs which have been like this for over a year now as they are still in their boxes in the boot! :doh! The ones in the engine are well old and are probably the reason mine prefers a bit of diesel in the mix.

Best thing to do, is to increase the ratio until you notice lumpy running when cold - never fill to the neck during this period as you might just need to add a bit of diesel to get things going. I have ended up pouring kettles of hot water over the IP before now when I've been a bit zealous with the veg on really cold mornings!

Wicked, thank you both for the detailed explanations.

I am currently on half a tank of fuel (mixed from 20l of veg and 40ish l of diesel. Shall I bung in the last 20l of vegi with 5l of petrol n try my luck?

And yes in answer to "does it smell" yes it stinks of veg oil. Im also using a quater bottle of redex (small bottle)

och, go on lad, it's not my truck :D

Seriously though, it should be fine, just leave space at the moment for some extra diesel in case it refuses to start on a cold morning. Once you've got a happy winter mix, fill to the brim and leave everyone behind you strangely feeling like a chippy for tea. :lol

Eheh cheers :thumb2

Lastly anyones personal experience with filter change running on pure rape oil? As mentioned previously I bought a filter anyway. :thumb2

Always good to keep a filter in the boot (and a decent filter wrench to remove it) in case you get a blockage. In theory veg can clean out the gunk that *may* have built up in the diesel tank, but I think Bio is more likely to do that. Certainly never had any issue with mine (will probably now!).

The spare covers you in case the temp drops massively after filling with oil that then thickens and blocks it up, mind you , as I type, I'm thinking that more a concern for the likes of Banshee and me who run waste veg oil. Clean new oil should be fine really.

alex im oil shopping tomorrow il show you what i do when we look at your low clutch peddle on sunday
