3.0L propshafts

Have only had the Terrano (2004 3.0L SVE auto 28K miles) a month & am working my way through a full service. First stumbling block: there do not appear to be any grease nipples on the props. Surely this is not right? Are there screw holes, that I have yet to find, to fit removable nipples?
It didn't come with an Owners Manual (can anyone please help me with this?) so I've very little to go on. Consequently I'm also finding the controlls a bit confusing to say the least.
Done a bit of towing (1.6T caravan) & am suitably impressed: except with the fuel consumption (low 20's at best) was led to expect better, but you can't have everything.
Upward & onward...........

Hi, I had to replace my UJ on the rear prop and the old one didn't have any grease nipples or blanking plugs, I think these are sealed.
What controls are you not sure of

The later models as well as having fixed hubs also have "maintenance free" sealed for life UJ's. Yep, I've had to fix mine too, the front prop I fixed by fitting the prop from an earlier model with grease nipples on both UJ's and the splined sliding joint.

That's bad news in my book: anything sealed=short life.
What sort of life can I expect from them?
Is it worth dissconnecting the props. & manualy greasing the sliders before they become too worn?

Got no handbook (I'm one of the few people that actualy enjoys reading these) sooo: don't know how to work radio, not sure about servicing details etc., & typicaly, had a fright when light came on dash: 'noo/d'. Another owner got me out of my panick: it means no overdrive (ie: no top gear) as it can be switched off (by mistake!!!) via a button on the side of the gear lever.....phew! That's about par for the course up to now.

Hi Mick, I bought my car about a month ago and it's done 79000 now, the UJ had gone as there was a slight vibration in the when driving and movement when I twisted the prop by hand,so don't worry at your mileage mate.
I fitted a replacement UJ from Millners which has a grease nipple and now it's nice and smooth to drive.
My cars a manual so don't have the overdrive button.

As for servicing, do you have the service record book as this shows you what intervals and what needs checking/changing.

The radio, if it has the tape cassette hole in the display, will have a 6 disc changer under the drivers seat and remote control on the steering wheel, pretty simple to use really and by joining this club, you will learn a lot more about these trucks.

You will know when they go as you will get a judder circa 55 MPH, my first one was knackered you could feel the movement in it. The second had no movement in it but when off was nearly seized in one movement plane

That's some mess, takes me back to the 70's when a similar thing happened at 25K on my Hillman Imp. The next one had grease nipples & lasted 120K+.

At least the replacements have nipples then. What about the sliding joint, surley this would benifit from greasing? I'm hoping the auto will give the shafts an easier life.

I am not sure the later unit splines are intended to be greased. As they are coated with Rislan or similar close tolerance nylon finish, that achieves the final machined dimensions and is supposedly self lubricating. But if/when it does wear then a replacement shaft is probably the only viable way. Thats partly why I replaced the front shaft on mine with an earlier "low tech" design that can be greased.
