Any of you guys know if you can change the valve stem seals on a 3.0 in situ without taking the head off?
I'm getting plumes of grey/blue smoke on start up but it clears after a bit.
Phil

That will be a head off job I think, certainly was when my Fiesta was done :thumb2

Are you sure it's the seals, how is it starting ?, could it be the glow plugs ? I once had an issue of lots of smoke suddenly, I poured injector cleaner into the tank and it cleared the smoke problem, worth a try :thumb2

2.7 can be done in situ, do not know about the three, will have a look at the workshop manual, Rick

do not have a 3 to look but if what I see on the book is right then it is a double overhead camshaft job so not straight forward at all, but could be looking at the wrong engine as getting double vision now Rick

Double vision eh!
Lol to much partying I think lolol 😉

It starts fine, fires up without any issue apart from the plume of smoke!

Correct it is a double overhead cam and 16 valves, so guess it wouldn't be a simple job either way?

Are you just meaning you get an initial plume of smoke on startup or is it more than that?

I get a small puff of smoke out the exhaust when I start her up after a cold (near freezing or lower) night but all my diesels have done that and I've always considered that normal with older diesel engines :nenau

My old Shogun was terrible when cold and you should see the smog patch my 40 year old tractor leaves!

Is this starting from cold or hot or both?

If only from cold, cycle the glow plugs twice and see if that makes any difference.

I would personally be surprised if it was stem seals...

Called it :augie

The 2.7 can be done in situ, I've seen one done on YouTube :thumb2

This happens from cold, but can happen even when I have left it to cool down for an hour or two.
I start her up and a plume of this smoke comes out, not all of the time mind you, I Rev her up a few times and it clears.
I'm sure that it is valve stem seals because of these factors.
It starts on the button, every time.

Can you post a video of it ?
Is it using engine oil ? does it smell of burnt oil or is it diesel smelling smoke.
